Proposed renaming by Congress[edit]

FYI: S.916, introduced by Sen. Larry E. Craig, proposes to expand the boundaries of the Nat'l Monument and rename it Minidoka National Historic Site. I sent up a redirect for now.—Eoghanacht talk 17:56, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

But it's not a National Historic Site until legislation is passed to create it. As of now, it's still the "Minidoka Internment National Monument." -- Gmatsuda 21:07, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Name[edit]

Whatever you call it, "relocation", "evacuation", "internment" center, it is what it is, a concentration camp. And it was not an "evacuation" or "relocation", it was an ethnic cleansing. Which is a crime against humanity.

I don't know when or if US population and government recognizes that it was not a "relocation" but a crime. But the public should be more scrupulous.

Besides, wikipedia is not controlled by US congress, right? Or is it now?

You're correct that the camp fits the dictionary definition of a concentration camp, but it was not an extermination camp. I think of ethnic cleansing as referring to genocide (i.e., killing), but our article says it can also include forcible displacement, so you're right about that too. I'm not sure how you can say this wasn't a relocation, however. People were literally relocated—I don't think you'll get anyone to argue about that. Yes, it was a relocation that went against American ideals and laws, and in that sense it's deplorable, but to put this on the same level of extermination camps and genocides really does a disservice to the memory of genocide victims. The US wronged these people, but I think you might be taking it a bit too far. --BDD (talk) 16:47, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"Relocation" was a euphemism intentionally used by the WRA (relocation camp, relocation center), as a way to sanitze and hide what they were really doing at these camps.
