Change Menjarna Shenkora to Minjarna Shenkora[edit]

Hello Llywrch, I suggested a change of this article name. Because Minjar and Minjarna Shenkora is the correct spelling. See my arguments @ [[1]] Do you agree/disagree? Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 02:20, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Inasmuch as there is (to my knowledge) no generally accepted transliteration scheme from Fidal to Latin characters, one can't say either is a correct/incorrect spelling. That said, many of my spellings of Ethiopian names in the articles I created or contributed to were taken from the first work I consulted, & thus are inconsistent, outdated, or just plain odd. Further, I have almost never heard any of these nouns spoken, so I don't know how accurate this spelling is. And there is the matter that often in my dialect of American English there is no distinction between /i/ & /e/ -- which often impairs my spelling. Therefore, I really can't object to this change as long as you leave a redirect at the original spelling of the article. -- llywrch (talk) 16:37, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This map from UN OHCA spells it "Minjar Shenkora" [2]. I had no luck with Google n-gram [3] ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 08:22, 30 November 2021 (UTC). Then there's a government agency which spells it "Menjar Shenkora" on their Facebook page [4]. And an academic paper with the spelling "Minjar Shenkora" [5]. A lot of other web-search hits are pulling info from Wikipedia. I suggest we note both spellings in the article body, and am neutral about the page title. ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 08:32, 30 November 2021 (UTC). (To complicate things, our own article on Geʽez script lists ም = mə = [mɨ]. ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 08:46, 30 November 2021 (UTC).)[reply]
@Pelagic This what came up on my google search [[6]] & [[7]] and the archived census source uses two variants Minjar Shenkora & Minjarna Shenkora, both with a i. Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 09:41, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@llywrch You are right there's not one universally accepted Amharic fidal translation into Latin, there are several, and therefore the same words came out different in various sources(books). Ethiopians are used to these different Latin varities. I can easily tell Menjarna means Minjar when reading.
Question though, did you consult with someone with (native) knowledge of Amharic? Menjarna doesn't sound right (also in my head) when spoken. If i heard it for the first time without the word Shenkora, i would ask the person to repeat it. Because it sounded off to me i google searched it, and also searched the census source, there it's written more like how it's pronounced (emphasize on i and n, M-ii-nn-jar) that i'm familiar with. Can you do the redirect and name change, i don't know how? Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 09:41, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dawit S Gondaria:Back when I wrote this article there were a number of native Amharic speakers active on Wikipedia (most notably Yom, responsible for the two GAs on Ethiopia) & at least one native speaker of Tigrinya, none of whom mentioned that the spelling was inaccurate. (And I notice that over the years a few other people with obvious ties to Ethiopia have edited this article to varying degrees, & no one has commented on the spelling until now. Which is odd.) But as I mentioned above, I'm not defending the present spelling -- pleading lack of knowledge -- & if "Minjar" is more correct than "Menjar" (which, again, to my untrained ear sound very similar), then please change it. At the time I was more concerned with people to properly using Ethiopian names -- e.g. calling the emperor Haile Selassie & not just "Haile" or "Selassie" -- a problem that still plagues articles on Ethiopia. Probably the most important matter is that the spelling in the text matches the spelling in the article name.
The procedure to move a page to a new name & leaving a redirect in its place is simple. At the top of each Wikipedia page there should be a link "More": click on that, you'll have a pull-down menu, & one option is "Move". Select that. You'll be presented with a page the provides you with a number of options, most visibly what you want to rename the page to; below that there will be two check boxes, already selected for you, indicating "Move associated talk page" & "Leave a redirect behind". Leave both of those checked -- & you're done. I hope those brief instructions are clear. -- llywrch (talk) 16:42, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks all, for the productive discussion. I've updated the Wikidata item to reflect the variety of spellings. ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 09:09, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
