Second Largest Town in Tottori?

[edit]

I have commented out the line claiming that Misasa is the second largest town in the prefecture. This needs clarification and citation. Tottori prefecture includes both the cities of Yonago and Tottori, both far larger than Misasa. I am not replacing this for now, because I don't have a reference myself. I know this is inaccurate because I lived in Kurayoshi and traveled to Misasa often. It is not the second largest town in Tottori. It is possible that it is depending on how "city" and "town" and "village" are being defined and/or mapped into the Japanese language, but if this is the case, it needs to be specifically stated. As it is, this fact is very misleading. Misasa is a very small village. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stekun (talkcontribs) 03:26, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Japanese version (which is sufficiently long) has this statement in the intro: 鳥取県において2番目に大きな町で. This is pretty much exactly "it is the 2nd largest town in Tottori". If you look at the prefecture article, you'll see how it lists cities differently. If you think this needs better specification or more elaboration for the reader, please add it, but I think the fact should go back in the article. -Theanphibian (talkcontribs) 03:43, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Theanphibian, you're right that the Japanese article states that "Misasa is the second biggest town in Tottori Prefecture." However, we can't expect English readers to know the difference between a town and a city in the context of Japanese municipalities. Without that essential distinction, the "2nd biggest" factoid is wildly misleading and I think should be left out.
If it's left in, the cities vs. towns issue should be clarified, possibly in the form of a footnote. But that's really outside the scope of this article, which is another reason I feel that this all should be left out entirely.

Is it really that impossible to effectively display the fact? btw, there are 4 cities, so 7th overall. -Theanphibian (talkcontribs) 12:18, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Frankly I don't think it's that interesting a fact to begin with. "Second biggest town in Tottori" is hardly an achievement. Would you also want to go around ranking all the cities in Tottori by population? Why stop with Tottori?
Anyone who really cares can figure this out by looking at the population numbers. -Amake 14:23, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
