Early focus on building

[edit]

I focused a lot on the building itself and it's architecture in these early posts because it really is authentic looking old style building. Once the museum is open and active I would fully support (and contribute to) adding a larger focus on the artwork.

Re: the building - I'm not just talking about the copper joints on the roof - which they have done a pretty good job on (but everyone can do that), but the whole thing. The brick work appears to be authentic. The large stone pieces are also very authentic looking. If they aren't real (as in solid) and they aren't old (as in the age/patina) then someone has done a very good job on them.

Downtown Marunouchi has a habbit of trying to mix old with new and it doesn't always work well. Both Marunouchi Building and Shin-Marunouchi building are built in the style of a new glass box skyscraper built on top of a base which is in the same shape/size (usually 3-5 stories and rounded corners) which attempts to mimic the original building that stood there in the early mid-1900s. The bases on both those buildigns are so modern looking that it is not a very convincing reproduction. Nearby Ginko-kyokai building (GKB) tried to do the new-on-top-of-old trick with a victorian red brick veneer which looks cheap... pick it up at a home supply store cheap... The corners are not convincing at all. Industry Club of Japan building is another example, and while better than the GKB it is still has you wondering if it is a new building made to look old.

Bottom line is that the new Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum building looks very real, and very old, but just well-maintained... plus it doesn't have a 40 story glass box jutting out of the top.  7  23:30, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
