Monta Vista Name[edit]
The claim that "'Monta Vista' means "mountain view" in Portuguese[citation needed]" seemingly does not make sense. My guess is that the name is actually supposed to be Italianate, not Portuguese.
There were indeed Spanish explorers in early California, as well as descendants of Native Americans, Spaniards, and Mexicans; but the area around Cupertino, Monta Vista, and Montebello Ridge was originally dominated by Italian immigrants, and many of them working in the wine vineyards, orchards, and ranches. There is some speculation as to when the first Italians arrived in California and worked in agriculture, but apparently, there were some of them here much earlier than others, and many of them were skilled workers. The name Cupertino is actually given by de Anza in tribute to St. Joseph of Copertino, a town in Italy, and it's been variantly spelled. Montebello is also a common name of Piemonte, Italy, as there were many Piemontese immigrants working in the wineries like nearby Picchetti, and even what was the earlier Montebello Ridge, and the adjacent orchards and ranches in that vicinity.
Note that the Italian word "mónta" means "mount", but it can also mean "covering", as in the Italian word "copertura". So, the name "Monte Vista" is not only similar to nearby "Mountain View" in its meaning, but also that of Cupertino itself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.202.143.106 (talk) 22:20, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
