Titles[edit]

Ok, here's the situation as I see it. We have four notable people—the three currently listed here and N0TABENE's very good draft—who could all be referred to as "Montgomery Cunningham Meigs" or "Montgomery Meigs". They're all prominent, without a primary topic among them. So they'll need disambiguation. I propose moving this disambiguation page to the shorter version, per WP:CONCISE, and a slightly better fit for the ships. (Well, the ships could just be in a See also; they're not too important here.) Options for the people:

Montgomery C. Meigs: This title will have to redirect to the dab. The new title could be Montgomery C. Meigs (1816–1892) or Montgomery C. Meigs (American Civil War).
Montgomery C. Meigs, Jr.: Should be fine. He's the only Jr.
Draft:Montgomery Cunningham Meigs: This could be published to Montgomery Cunningham Meigs (1919–1944) or Montgomery Cunningham Meigs (World War II).
Montgomery Meigs: He'll probably have to be Montgomery Meigs (born 1945). He isn't known for any one war particularly, and some more standard disambiguators like (American general) would still be ambiguous.

Finally, what to do with Montgomery "Monty" Meigs kind of depends on whether anyone besides Jr. was nicknamed Monty. I think that's about everything... --BDD (talk) 19:15, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The dates work fine for me. Actually, from my reading, ALL of them informally went by "Monty" or "Mont" so that doesn't really help. Still not sure why my original attempt wouldn't have worked mais, c'est la vie, c'est la guerre, no pun intended. BDD do you want to retitle the articles, then how to handle all of the refs throughout WP to any of the M.C. Meigs'? Thanks for the nice comments about my draft article. NotaBene, I'll go ahead and move the rest of this, yes. I think the original attempt wouldn't've worked because the Civil War general, not to say the others, seems at least a prominent as the WWII one. The primary topic guideline suggests an article should only be at an ambiguous title "if it is highly likely—much more likely than any other topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term." BDD, no I'm copacetic with the resolution you and Malcolmxl5 came up with. The Civil War general will probably get the vast bulk of page hits anyway. As long as the disambiguation page links make it clear who is who there's no point in further discussion, IMHO. I greatly appreciate the assistance of both of you. I did want to get this page up as a tribute to the surviving members of the 23rd Tank Battalion and the 12th Armored Division whom I've met. I'm still looking for a copyright-free image of Lt. Col. BDD not to belabor this, but I noticed you modified the Meigs dab page, changing the descriptor for "Montgomery Meigs" from the current general to "several American military leaders". The wikilink is now a redlink since "Montgomery Meigs" page no longer exists. I know this is frowned upon, but shouldn't either "Montgomery Meigs" link to the "Montgomery Cunningham Meigs" dab page, or should the name and description be changed back to Montgomery Meigs (born 1945), so that it links back to the individual?NotaBene —Preceding undated comment added 14:49, 10 February 2016‎
