Different kinds of horsepower[edit]

Dear Lightmouse - I think it's great what you're doing, going through substituting conversion formulae for the bhp texts in the automobile articles. BUT with the very old cars (ie, here, the Morris Ten) you hit upon a misunderstanding which makes me think you are not as old as ... as I am.

BHP is a measure of a car's power output. I can't remember if the Americans (SAE) and the Germans (DIN) ever agreed how to measure it: that's outside the scope of thuis message in any case.

The Morris Ten (and a lot of British and French and Italian cars from between 1900 and 1940ish)was named after it's Tax horsepower. Back in 1905 tax horse power very roughly correlated with bhp, but by 1920 it didn't. Tax horse power in UK simply reflected the size and shape of the cylinders, I think - there's something in wiki about it under RAC Horsepower as far as I remember. The French and Italians had slightly different ways to define tax horse power, but theirs didn't, after about 1910, correlate with bhp either. And they, like the Brits, used these tax horse power figures effectively to define certain sizes / classes of automobile. Hope this is clear, but the relevant wiki articles are even if I'm not. Thanks again for the conversion upgrades you're doing. Must go. BestCharles01 (talk) 11:56, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think I understand the issue. In addition to the issue you highlight, there are many cases for metric-designed cars where Wikipedia has incorrect hp values and these can only be resolved by having the kW value. Perhaps it is best discussed at the horsepower article itself or at the relevant wikiproject.Lightmouse (talk) 16:38, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't mention before, but maybe should have done, that I tried this morning to put my para on your talk page but somehow I couldn't persuade it to startr a new section. Probably just me being dim, but I share the view that this discussion doesn't necessarily belong here. I'm afraid my understanding of the computer side of this project is pretty minimal, but if you can make the thing work, feel free to cut and paste the whole section from here to my talk page or to your talk page or anywhere else that makes sense to you.
Disentangling the reasons that can cause a bhp value to be wrongly quoted (I still suspect wrong copy typing within or from a source can be a common reason: charts and tightly packed paras of data in Observers' Books of cars and other erudite sounding directories must be very tricky for the publishers' staff to proof read.) is a whole other can of worms. A lot of things touching on vehicle specs is open to a lot of 'yes, but...' questions, and with bhp one isusually depneding on the maufacturers' published figure... Danger of drifting off topic...
