Oregon Pioneers document

[edit]

There was a lot of research done for the biography of Moses Harris in this document, but I am having a hard time finding reliable sources (i.e., not personal websites, genealogy postings) for:

  • Born about 1800
  • Born in Union County, South Carolina
  • Married a Native American woman and had several children
  • That he is white or bi-racial - I have not found any reliable sources that have said that. The biggest clue, IMO, comes from the mock epitaph by James Clyman. See Moses Harris (mountain man)#Later years and death. However, the document states that Jess Applegate said he was a deeply tanned white man. It says secondly that Rev. Cushing Eells said that Moses was called a half-breed.
  • Based upon his letters, he seemed to have been well-educated.
