Physical Description[edit]

Where is height and the other physical stats? Shouldn't every entry for an athlete have those? (The way, at least, they stood in the athlete's active days. We often shrink in height and gain in weight as we get older!) The Gnome 06:52, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aborted college commitment[edit]

I recall a broadcast in which Lefty or his co-commentator said that Moses actually came to College Park to register for classes, but left after 3 days to sign with the Stars. Anyone got the low-down on the actual time-frame of Moses committing to Maryland, being drafted by Utah, and signing his pro contract? Ellsworth (talk) 22:54, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Family[edit]

"fo', fo', fo'"[edit]

Did he mean it will be 4-0 all the way, or "4 games at a time"?

On Dr. J's page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Erving - it says as follows: "... causing Malone to make the famous prediction of "fo-fo-fo (four-four-four)," meaning all the Sixers needed to do was win four games in each series. The media misinterpreted the comment and thought he meant the Sixers would sweep the entire playoffs."

Huge flaws with this article[edit]

1. Not Wikipedian, but filled with sports writer hype. For example, Malone is called a "giant" but most at his positions are his height or more.

2. Largely undocumented

3. Nothing about personal life, including why he died at the young age of 60

Copyright violation[edit]

As has been discovered by Bagumba, the article as was written at the time of his death was a substantial duplication of his NBA.com bio, which is a copyright violation. If this page is to be posted at Wikipedia:In The News, the duplication needs to be dealt with. I'm in the process now, but if anyone else can help, that will speed this up. As of this version on 21:29, 14 September 2015, it seems that https://tools.wmflabs.org/dupdet/ issues are resolved. However, that tool is primitive, and only looks for exact matching phases. the other tool at https://tools.wmflabs.org/copyvios looks for patterns, and simply adding or changing a few words doesnt fool it. It is currently showing a 92.3% confidence of a copyvio. One example is the following:

  • Wikipedia: "Malone, a free agent, signed a three-year contract with the Atlanta Hawks prior to the 1988–89 season, and he had another All-Star campaign"
  • NBA.com: "The Atlanta Hawks signed Malone as a free agent prior to the 1988-89 season, and he went on to have another All-Star campaign."

How low is this percentage supposed to go? Out of curiosity, I ran a check on Derek Jeter, compared to the Internet, because I got it to GA and then FA status by fighting and clawing and rewriting more than I thought was possible over the course of a few years. It comes up as 75.6% with an MLB.com subpage I've never seen before. Jeter's article couldn't possibly be less plagiarized, but there's only so many ways to say "All-Star this, MVP that" in a biographical article. We can't change Malone's career, so how much can we possibly differentiate this from the NBA.com profile? – Muboshgu (talk) 22:26, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I don't think I'll be working on this that much more today. My guess is the tool will show a high percentage regardless, which is somewhat expected because both are comprehensive biographies. However, the paragraph structures should have more variance as far as order of content. I got the 1st paragraph in the Atlanta section to have less contiguous red by adding in some new content from another source. My advice would be to work on having less seas of red. The red in itself is going to be unavoidable to an extent, and not necessarily a problem. Changing a few words here and there is helpful, but it won't reduce that percentage all that much. Prior to his death, it was 97.7%, which shows we have made progress here. Honestly, I don't know how much better it can become, because the wiki article and NBA.com profile need to cover the same important details, more or less. (Speaking of the "less", I'm glad I found those details about his divorce, restraining order, and arrest that NBA.com wouldn't include.) – Muboshgu (talk) 23:44, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Now down to 90.8%, which shows amount of cleanup done. However, I don't think the actual raw number is significant. As we have been discussing, a comprehensive bio is going to have a lot of overlap, with common phrases about stat lines, awards won, and outcomes of playoff series. Looking at the comparisons from Earwig's Copyvio Detector now, I no longer see consecutive sentences or whole paragraphs highlighted in red. These are now short phrases that are matching, and are interspersed throughout non-matching text. I think copyvio is no longer a major concern.—Bagumba (talk) 02:25, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, I haven't left myself with much time tonight, but I think there's a lot of information that could be trimmed and consolidated. (And not just to avoid copyvio concerns; it would also help with readability.) For example, we don't need to mention each time he made an All-Star team, unless there was something especially noteworthy about a given All-Star game. The player profile section should be sufficient for summarizing such achievements. We don't need to mention every All-NBA selection in the prose, either. A short statement in the player profile section should be good enough. Some of the statistical data mentioned in the prose also seems more important than others; for example, there are various rankings we could do without.
