Some dispute

[edit]

I've removed this big block from the article referring to some dispute over 20 years ago...

According to Lisa Bavington, in December 2001, Wayne DeMilia contacted Andrulla Blanchette about her plans to compete at the upcoming 2002 Ms. International and told her she had been chosen by Jim Lorimer, Ms. International co-promoter, and that she accepted his invitation. On 12 February 2002, she arrived in New York prior to the competition to adjust to the new environment. On 20 February 2002, she called Wayne that morning before departing for Columbus, Ohio to remind him to bring her 2000 Ms. Olympia heavyweight gold medal to the show (it was being replaced, the original had been engraved with the wrong name). He was unavailable however, so she left a voicemail. Wayne returned the call sometime later and said that the promoter had removed her from the competitor list earlier that same morning. Apparently, he had not been informed of her travel plans and was not aware that she would be competing at the contest. On his advice, she called Jim who was quite concerned since they had used her photograph for the event's promotion. She explained that she had been reachable via email or phone should there have been any need to contact her. He asked her to have Wayne call him personally. She waited for a reply, heard nothing, and flew into Columbus, Ohio.

On 21 February 2002, that evening both Wayne and Jim met her outside the competitor's meeting. She was told that she would not be allowed to compete at the show, as she was required to use the IFBB assigned travel agent as a way to be reimbursed. She reminded them that she had fronted her travel expenses at previous events and been reimbursed by the IFBB at a later date. However, because of the misunderstanding, she was willing to cover her own expenses. Wayne then mentioned the contract he had not received. She explained that she had been in the process of moving and had not gotten the contract. She also questioned why Wayne hadn't noticed he had received no contract from her and tried to get in touch to find out why. She also pointed out that two bodybuilders had competed in the recent Mr./Ms. Olympia without having signed contracts - Kevin Levrone and Joanna Thomas. He told her that, like Kevin Levrone who was fined $25,000 for his unsigned contract at the 2001 Mr. Olympia, she would also have to pay a fine to compete, but that her amount would be reduced to $5,000. Later that evening, other officials said they would speak to Wayne on her behalf. She waited for a reply, heard nothing and went to bed.

On 22 February 2002, the morning of the 2002 Ms. International, she caught up with Wayne in the hotel lobby and was informed that paying the fine was no longer an option, as she would not be able to come up with the money in time to compete. She assured him that she could, but he pointed to the fact that she had not been weighed in the night before. He told her his final answer was no and told her to tell her fans that she had "screwed up." She watched the show from the audience with the rest of the fans who came to see her compete. It was alleged that she, who had previously on stage at the Pose and Perform exhibition in New York, said that the idea of a forming a union could never work due to the fact that the women competed against one another, along with Charles Peoples, who runs www.thevalkyries.com, were trying to organize female bodybuilders and incite a work stoppage by signing their contracts and not showing up to the contests. She later commented on the allegations with the following: "On the subject of a female bodybuilders union, as well as a scheme to deflect other athletes from contests:

It’s the first I’ve heard of it. It isn’t my aim to affect whether or not other women compete. As far as making waves, yes, I’ll make a few, but I will do it honestly, by sharing some truths with the fans and others involved in the sport of bodybuilding.

Bill Dobbins emailed Wayne about the incident and got the following reply:

[Andrulla] never sent a contract, never contacted us, never even sent her Pro Application Form, her money came from Charles Peoples in PA

.

Joanna Thomas was in constant contact with us, informed us of her whereabouts, and did evenually sign a contract.

Kevin Levrone did not sign a contract, had not registered, and paid a $25,000. fine in order to compete.

Athletes have been very critical of the IFBB when we are the only organization doing anything for the athletes. If the athletes want to be treated like professionals, then they have to act like professionals.

Myself and other Officials are tired of covering for the doubt....then being reported as the worst people in the sport.

I have put out too much of my own money to cover expenses of shows that lost money that are not mine in order to keep them going. If it wasn't for me, Jim Manion, Jan Tana and Jim Lorimer there would not be any Womens Bodybuilding
.

I hear that Andrulla and Charles Peoples are trying to start a union, have athletes sign contracts then not show up in order to show their power to the IFBB. That will be their final mistake, because if that happens, we will end Womens Bodybuilding.
