Please give me a chance to fill this out before anyone goes reverting it back into the main solar cell article.

There's a lot going on in the III-V solar cell world, and it's a bit much to put into one article.

The http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/iel5/16/17204/00792006.pdf link in resources redirects to a 'login' page, not the pdf document - this link should be fixed or removed.

Theoretical efficiency of an ideal radiative recombination limited solar cell with a step-function optical absorption edge at the bandgap of crystalline silicon (1.12 eV) is 32.9%.

Using concentrations on the order of 500 to 1000, meaning that a 1 cm² square cell can use the light collected from a 1000 cm² area, produces the highest efficiencies seen to date. Three-layer cells are fundamentally limited to 63%, but existing commercial prototypes have already demonstrated over 40%.[1][2] These cells capture about 2/3 of their theoretical maximum performance, so assuming the same is true for a non-concentrated version of the same design, one might expect a three-layer cell of 30% efficiency under normal sunlight. This is not enough of an advantage over traditional silicon designs to make up for their extra production costs. For this reason, almost all tandem cell research for terrestrial use is dedicated to concentrator systems, normally using mirrors or fresnel lenses.

To date, no large-scale high-efficiency tandem cell commercial systems have been deployed, although one has been planned for Spain.[3] PV generator deployments using conventional cells are currently reaching about $5 per peak Watt for deployment and installation costs, a number the concentrator systems cannot yet match. However, Boeing's Spectrolab division claims to be aiming for $3 a Watt in the short term.[1] amorphous silicon solar cells for residential and commercial installations are often made as triple-junction tandem cells, and these are commercially available from Uni-Solar and other companies, but because single films of amorphous silicon solar cells tend to have low efficiency, triple-junction amorphous silicon solar cells can have a similar or even lower efficiency than a single-junction crystalline silicon solar cell. Note: The advantages of tandem amorphous-silicon solar cells (compared to conventional non-tandem solar cells) is not higher efficiency, but lower cost and the possibility of using flexible substrates.

Change the title

Please change the subject title to Multi-Junction Photovolatic Cell or Multi-Junction Solar Cell. Multijunction is not a word in English, hopefully. Kckid (talk) 01:13, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The term "Multijunction Cell" is used on NREL's famous efficiency chart. It could be considered an industry standard term. However, search results in google are slightly in favor of the term Multi-junction solar cell (54k) over Multijunction solar cell (39k). Either case the proposed title does not conform to WP:NCCAPS. -- Rfassbind (talk) 00:19, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
