Missing info?[edit]

So... in this talk page people are saying that the killer knew that Milan was a transwoman and that he stated that to her before killing her, and that it was a hate crime, but the article doesn't explain this. The way the article is phrased, it shows that she was harrassed by a man and then murdered- but it doesn't indicate whether the man knew she was transexual, how he knew this and how it was proven to be a hate crime rather than a man killing a woman for whatever other despicable reason. I think this information is desperately needed in the article. 79.69.115.243 (talk) 15:25, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, it wasn't proven to be a hate crime. While editors are free tosay whatever they want about this crime on this talk page, I have made sure the article contains only information backed up by reliable sources.
That said, the perpetrator seemed to know she was a transsexual, since he said things like "I know what you have between your legs". --Damiens.rf 17:00, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why would you list romantic partners? How does it matter? --StellarNerd (talk) 21:19, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Children[edit]

Did she have any children? 96.230.180.76 (talk) 01:57, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. --StellarNerd (talk) 21:18, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Misattributed Quotes[edit]

The entire section involving Melissa Schlarz and Benjamin Heim Shepard take serious liberties with the quotes involved. Melissa is attributed sections from the book that clearly aren't their quotes. Benjamin's seems to be completely invented as it's just the phrasing from the Salon article referenced with no attribution to Shepard.

The quotes from the page are as follows:

Long-time trans activist Melissa Schlarz explained that since the mid-1970s, she had read about trans women being murdered in Times Square, but "what makes the Milan case significant is that until Amanda Milan no one responded."[5] Schlarz said that usually the newspapers were "dropping hints of transpanic" ambiguously.[5] Schlarz concluded that "Milan has become not a martyr, but a rallying cry. The activism around her death showed the world transgender people belong in the queer community – the message from activists is that there is no difference between Matthew Shephard and Amanda Milan. The response to her death tells the non-queer community: enough, today the violence stops."[5]

The actual quotes from the book cited are as follows:

"For many, Amanda Milan has become not a martyr, but a rallying cry. The activism around her death showed the world transgender people belong in the queer community and that what happens to one transgender girl at four in the morning outside the Port Authority is about everyone," Schlarz concluded. The message from activists is that there is no difference between Matthew Shepard and Amanda Milan. The response to her death tells the non-queer community: enough, today the violence stops. "It is not OK anymore. It is not OK for people to die because they are sex workers or die because they have AIDS or die because of drugs and alcohol."

And:

Rumors abounded about Milan’s death. In the weeks following, the papers ambiguously dropped hints about a "transpanic." Melissa Sklarz, a long-time trans advocate, had seen it before: My time hanging around the Times Square transsexual scene goes back to the mid 1970s. Amanda Milan was just the latest. People from all over the world, transgenders, come to Times Square. Everyone knows that’s where something is happening. In the past it was always the West Village or Times Square. What exactly was she doing? The trial is coming, we’ll have to wait and see.

Again, huge sections of the author's words are attributed to Melissa. I am new to contributing so am not sure how to handle this. I don't want to delete it, but it's pretty egregious. How do I ping the author to fix this (and double-check any other quotes they're claiming) so it's written correctly?

Here are the section from the book that show how incorrectly quoted Melissa was: [1] [2] [3] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Randomdude87 (talkcontribs) 15:00, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
