Music competitions did exist long before televised music competitions such as American Idol... Before the age of televised realty shows music competitions just prior were mainly based on mailed submissions which were judged by A&R's and other record labels and not open to the public. Music competitions have also been done over the radio. Billboard chart is a prime example.
