The reference to the quarrying of 'millstone' is curious - should this read '. . millstones were quarried . . '? As a geologist, I'm unaware of a rock type called 'Millstone'.

Does it not refer to Millstone_Grit ? EdwardLane (talk) 17:49, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If there were any Millstone Grit in the vicinity it might but this hill is formed principally from rhyolite, a rock of volcanic origin, together with a host of other related rocks from the Ordovician and early parts of the Silurian period, much predating the Millstone Grit which is Carboniferous of course. It may well be that one of the (presumably) volcaniclastic sandstones within this sequence was found to be suitable for making millstones, I suppose. It would be useful to have references for this info. You can view the geological detail at http://www.largeimages.bgs.ac.uk/iip/mapsportal.html?id=1001582 cheers Geopersona (talk) 20:42, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
yes good shout, this seems to confirm your suggestion. EdwardLane (talk) 20:47, 12 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well spotted! And v. interesting - that's the first time I've heard of that. thanks Geopersona (talk) 04:59, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I took a picture of the walls of the quarry so any geologists among us can identify the rock. The Coflein website seems to suggest it's Burrstone (or is that just a colloquial term used for millstones and not just ones made from limestone?) I know little to nothing about rocks but it's clearly full of fossils, or nodules. I'm out of my element, or I'd gladly update the article to include this information.Telenarn (talk) 11:07, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I know it's been a while but in reply as regards the image. . . they appear to be volcanic nodules and not fossils, lapilli perhaps from the Capel Curig Volcanic Formation - that's supported by EdwardLane's link. BGS identifies the rocks in this areas as being largely volcanic tuffs and rhyolites. Geopersona (talk) 07:33, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
