Requested move 8 July 2021

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: no consensus. Following this RM discussion remaining open for 9 weeks, there does not appear to be consensus for any of the options proposed (NEC Software Solutions, NEC Software Solutions UK, or for the article to remain at the current title). Northgate Public ServicesNEC Software Solutions UK – Company was renamed to NEC Software Solutions UK. • With 500k+ hits on "Northgate Public Services" and only 34 on "NEC Software Solutions UK" there is no indication that the latter is the Wikipedia:COMMONNAME. I will create a redirect. Sam Sailor 14:30, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to NEC Software Solutions, which is the name used at https://www.necsws.com/, per WP:NAMECHANGES. "NEC Software Solutions" has ~30k results on Google, which is reasonable following a recent name change. --Ahecht (TALK

  • The contested (by me) technical request is here in the history. For the record, I neither agreed nor disagreed with moving the page. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 11:20, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to NEC Software Solutions, Not sure what is going on, but my prior messages and arguments were not carried over from here. Bottom line is that Northgate in the title is misleading as that is a different corporate umbrella, and NEC is an entirely different one. Hence, this is not a brand-related concern exclusively as page title doesn't recognize absolutely new corporate ownership and can be potentially misleading to users unfamiliar with the topic. Secondly, as others users have noted, "NEC Software Solutions" returns ~30k results on Google, which is quite a lot (given that the company name change officially went through a month ago) and establishes basis for changing page title. I understand the initial request was lodged in for NEC Software Solutions UK, but NEC Software Solutions is also acceptable. FYI, the official legal name of the company is NEC Software Solutions UK Limited. It is also perfectly fine to have Northgate Public Solutions redirect to exist to NEC Software Solutions, if it changes. If possible, it would be helpful to redirect NEC Software Solutions UK to NEC Software Solutions as well. Folk309 (talk) 14:22, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose (if UK not in title), otherwise mild oppose/nuetral: (if moved with UK not in the title a new article probably be split). At this point in time, though it should be note the history of this company is significant in UK terms, and important the name change does not lead to scope creep and loss/minimization of the historical stuff. Their building looked a mess after the Buncefield fire at Hemel. A Business generally would like to promote its brand and current portfolio, for Wikipedia purposes the history is more often the key element. Djm-leighpark (talk) 08:28, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: Not moved, the consensus is that WP:NAMECHANGES applies and the new name is in use by current sources. No such user (talk) 07:57, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NEC Software SolutionsNorthgate Public Services – A recent request was posted in bad faith at WP:RM/TR styled as an "uncontroversial technical request"[1] As a result, move warring ensued, and the page is currently move protected in its current from. The move request essentially seeks consensus to either move the page back to it's former name, or keep the page as it is currently titled. May we achieve that consensus in the spirit of collaboration and the discipline of collegial good form? --John Cline (talk) 20:23, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • As this is a second request to revert the same undiscussed move, please feel free to ping and direct me to a more effective course of action. Please excuse the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience and understanding. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 17:01, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'll abstain from this as I've moved it once already, but I wanted to explain my rationale for reverting it the first time:
      • The original move request was closed as "no consensus" which really only means we don't have an opinion as to either title. Generally it is better to reach a consensus rather than move-warring
      • in this move request, one oppose found the search results inconclusive, and another stated that "UK" should be in the title, which is not right now
      • I searched Google trends and NGRAM viewer, both had no results and were inconclusive
      • The page mover who moved it back explained a rationale based on search hits, but those hits are without quotes which means they are based on individual terms in the query, not the entire query as-is. With quotes, the results are less than 100 each, inconclusive
      • Google news, with quotes, returns 692 results for "Northgate.." compared to 25 for "NEC" – this is compelling evidence for "Northgate..". The sources on the page use a mix of both
      • The original mover, Folk309 has been tagged as a possible COI for this topic, and participated in the move discussion, but performed the move anyway
      • Given all of this, I feel we should settle on Northgate struck out just to clarify I was only providing input as to my revert ASUKITE 04:05, 20 September 2021 (UTC), or at least have another (hopefully more-productive) move discussion. Sorry for the wall of text. ASUKITE 17:24, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
      • I wanted to add one more note, that per WP:NAMECHANGES, news sources published after a name change are given extra weight if they generally use the new title. I have not assessed whether this is true, but it may help cut some of the bureaucracy short here. ASUKITE 17:32, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. In my view, we should always use the current name of businesses, except in some exceptional circumstances and I don't see arguments in the previous discussion that this is one of these exceptional cases. JBchrch talk 04:26, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose move. Subject's own website shows this as the companies official name.[2] WP:ABOUTSELF specifically allows this kind of verification. In accordance with WP:NAMECHANGES, if reliable sources published after the new name was announced use the new name, Wikipedia should also begin using the new name (subject to certain extenuating circumstances which do not appear relevant to this company name). Whereas, reliable sources published after the official name change have begun using the new name.[3] --John Cline (talk) 03:26, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - considering comments in the previous discussion suggesting that the company name should use an additional qualifier like UK or UK Limited, published reliable sources show "NEC Software Solutions" as the company's global name with several regional affiliates operating as subsidiaries such as: UK Limited, Canada Limited, ANZ Pty Limited, and India Private Limited.[4] I will be creating redirects from these subsidiaries to this article, as the parent company, but I think that calls to add a subsidiary qualifier here should not be considered.--John Cline (talk) 03:26, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
