Wenji Gefersa[edit]

I believe Wenji Gefersa is also called "Wenji". I thought it was pronounced "Wonji": I see there is a town Wonchi but it is nowhere near this area ("Wenji" is very close to Adama city). There is a big sugar plantation and/or processing plant there but I don't know if I can find a source for it. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 13:12, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just tried a Google search on "wenji sugar" and got quite a few results ([1]). One is a PDF from the Nordic Africa Institute ([2]), it includes a timeline of the Wenji Sugar Estate (along with a bibliography). Here's the home page for the entire document. Also, confusingly enough it spells the aformentioned "Wonchi" as "Wenchi". -- Gyrofrog (talk) 14:35, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Transliterating words from fidel is confusing in itself due to the lack of a standard, widely-accepted system. (A lot of my cross-source identifications are admittedly based on informed guesswork due to this lack of standardization.) BTW, the Nordic Africa Institute has a wealth of reliable information on Ethiopian local history. -- llywrch 17:58, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Right, the N.A.I. document spells the town "Wenji", while the Oromia government report spells the sugar plantation "Wonji." (reminds me of a typical conversation: "I was just reading about zema." "What?" "Zema, z-e-m-a. It's church music." "Oh! You mean zema!" "Yes, that's what I said, zema.") Now I recall a previous mention of the N.A.I. text, probably from you.
