Bowers Mansion

[edit]

Bowers Mansion is in Washoe, NV, not LA… – iridescent 01:12, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ah, good point, the two pics of Nevada sites on the main page here should have been of Louisiana sites instead. Replaced them. One could add more pics too. Thanks! doncram (talk) 01:33, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Allen, Beauregard, and Vernon Parishes

[edit]

I live in the extreme northeast corner of ""Allen Parish"" near Pitkin. The ""Vernon Parish"" line is behind my house, we shop in "Beauregard Parish" (DeRidder), and pass by the "Fullerton Mill and Town" almost every day. Are there any others working on these projects?

I work on NRHP places nation-wide, and am happy to work on NRHP articles here too. If you're local, can you take photos of any of these? If there's any particular NRHP place or two you want to suggest, I'd be happy to obtain the NRHP application documents as sources and work at developing the articles.
Hmm, i went to see which are the NRHP properties located closest to the Allen/Vernon/Beauregard parish boundaries intersection, by checking on the linked Bing map. Unfortunately the Bing map only shows the first 200 coordinates given on the Wikipedia page, so it will display only ones midway through Madison parish, by my count. It omits at least the Vernon ones. The linked Google map works okay though. To work more conveniently on these Allen, Vernon, and Beauregard parishes, perhaps we should split those parishes out to one combo page or to three individual pages, anyhow. Would that be helpful? doncram (talk) 17:47, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Doncram, I plan to take, get family to take, and otherwise acquire pictures.

  • We have a copy of the book "DeRidder Louisiana, The first 100 years" -(1903-2003). There is even a photo of my very young (at the time) wife (not relevant to the articles) in there. The picture shows a date of 1973 but my wife (she was there) assures me it is cir. 1965 and includes her kindergarden class.
  • The Old Beauregard Parish Jail certainly has a rich history as is well documented. From the book it states that, "The old jail is a unique structure, it has the possible distinction of being the only penal institution in the country using "Collegiate Gothic" design in the first decade of the 20th century." This is according to architectural historian Johnathian Fricker of the Department of Historic Preservation. There is even a picture taken during construction. I will have another learning curve as I try to convert this picture to svg.
  • I had trouble accessing the NRHP site (several attempts) so will look later. Apparently it is under construction and/or being moved to NPS.org.
  • I do not have a lot of knowledge in this area (WP) but feel I have the education (and ability) to add to an article (although all this is new) so be my guest and feel free to start, do, add to, edit, or anything else you like. I am (it appears) unique in that I have the ability to discuss relevance in information and to deduce if including, or excluding (regardless of personal preferences) information is important or not.
  • As for "splitting pages there is some ignorance(lack of knowledge) on my part as to what would be best so you can do or suggest and we can worry about discussing this later.
    • A little confusing(to some)information;
  • We live in the very north west portion of Allen Parish (on the Vernon Parish border) with a Pitkin (also Vernon Parish) address but a Sugartown (Beauregard Parish) phone number. Oakdale (16 miles) has a more personable hospital. All three towns have a Wal-Mart but DeRidder (23 miles) is more preferable than Leesville (26 miles) and we have property in Vernon Parish.
  • I was born at Fort Polk and raised mostly in Beauregard and Vernon Parish. I was actually raised in Rosepine (Vernon Parish) and some of us try to enjoy a sort of dual residence (at least in word or thought)) of sort as this town is only about 4 miles from DeRidder and the north Beauregard Parish line but a lot farther from Leesville.
  • My family was among the earlier settlers of Rosepine and before the tax incintives it was better (unbelievable) to get rid of an old building. A very old building known as the "Mayflower Building" with ties to the lawless of the era was one such.
  • With all that, I can "cover" DeRidder and the Fullerton Mill and Town to start but depending on where I am at the time several options are better. My wife's family was among the settlers of the Burr Ferry area (A Capt. John Liles) and she has interest there also.
  • As an after though I would say (to keep me sane) that if the three Parish's are "split" then I would say three might be better. What do you think?
  • You can pick one or some places in DeRidder to start and maybe Fullerton Mill and Town and Burr's Ferry. Whatever you would like and let me know. The holidays are upon us so it may be after the New Year before I can get more fully involved.
  • I have to solve the "Windows" problem with SVG. files before I can go too far concerning pictures. I downloaded a converter file but it does not work right.
  • Please remember that ignorance is a lack of knowledge, not the ability to learn, and at this point I could probably be put on a WP list of "Most Ignorant" so you will have to bear with me.

I would like to thank you in advance for any assistance provided. Otr500 (talk) 17:26, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I started the article Beauregard Parish Jail. Someone please take a look and let me know. I have a lot of sections and information yet to add and still could not access the NRHP site. It needs the NRHP referece #. Otr500 (talk) 12:59, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

split out to Louisiana regions

[edit]

The whole list-article could/should be split out into smaller regions, each having less than 200 NRHP places. That is or will be necessary for page-size / loading times reasons, eventually, as photos and descriptions get added. Also the linked Bing map only works for first 200 coordinates, although the linked Google map seems to work fine. Is there any official partition of Louisiana into smaller regions available, which we could follow? doncram (talk) 17:47, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The official Louisiana tourism webpages at http://www.louisianatravel.com/places give 5 regions: "Cajun Country", "Crossroads", "Greater New Orleans", "Plantation Country", and "Sportsman's Paradise". These break out into parishes as follows:
# Cajun Country
          o Acadia Parish
          o Allen Parish
          o Assumption Parish
          o Calcasieu Parish
          o Cameron Parish
          o Evangeline Parish
          o Iberia Parish
          o Jefferson Davis Parish
          o Lafayette Parish
          o Lafourche Parish
          o Saint Landry Parish
          o Saint Martin Parish
          o Saint Mary Parish
          o Terrebonne Parish
          o Vermilion Parish

# Crossroads
          o Avoyelles Parish
          o Beauregard Parish
          o Catahoula Parish
          o Concordia Parish
          o Grant Parish
          o La Salle Parish
          o Natchitoches Parish
          o Rapides Parish
          o Sabine Parish
          o Vernon Parish
          o Winn Parish

# Greater New Orleans
          o Jefferson Parish
          o Orleans Parish
          o Plaquemines Parish
          o Saint Charles Parish
o Saint John the Baptist Parish
          o Saint Tammany Parish
          o Tangipahoa Parish
          o Washington Parish

# Plantation Country
          o Ascension Parish
          o East Baton Rouge Parish
          o East Feliciana Parish
          o Iberville Parish
          o Livingston Parish
          o Pointe Coupee Parish
          o Saint Helena Parish
          o Saint James Parish
          o West Baton Rouge Parish
          o West Feliciana Parish

# Sportsman's Paradise
                + Bienville Parish
                + Bossier Parish
                + Caddo Parish
                + Caldwell Parish
                + Claiborne Parish
                + De Soto Parish
                + East Carroll Parish
                + Franklin Parish
                + Jackson Parish
                + Lincoln Parish
                + Madison Parish
                + Morehouse Parish
                + Ouachita Parish
                + Red River Parish
                + Richland Parish
                + Tensas Parish
                + Union Parish
                + Webster Parish
                + West Carroll Parish
I wonder if this partition into 5 regions is helpful or not. doncram (talk) 17:59, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regions

[edit]
  • I think a division is a very good idea and would make sense. I am new at all this and learning every day.
  • Those of us that live around here call it something different(I guess un-official) and break it down somewhat differently.
  • North (Sportsman's Paradise)
  • Central(Cross Roads) and maybe South Central
  • South- Of course (Cajun country)-is good
  • East- (Plantation Country)-is also good
  • South east (New Orleans area)

I would have to study the above list but can tell you that to those of us that live in Allen Parish(that are not cajun) we are in the central or south central part of the state. To some cajuns we(Allen Parish) are sometimes referred to as "yankees". The term, as used, applies to "northern folk" and not a political sub-division of the Civil War. I am sure that term would have caused a gun fight back then but not now. There is a joke of sort that if a person lives above I-10 they are either not a true cajun or are transplanted.

  • I would prefer Allen being listed in #crossroads, central, or south central, which ever name(s) has consensus, or lacking any reasonable objections.
  • Vernon Parish(central but also considered south central) is proud to be part of Sportsman's Paradise and is listed around here as the heart of such. There is big painting on a trussel, upon entering Leesville, that states for all to see, "Gateway to Toledo bend". I can assure you that there would be contention and excluding Vernon Parish from such(by name) would be offensive to many. Maybe locals don't visit louisianatravel.com. This is why I suggested alternative use of terms.
  • I like the term Plantation Country though and this should be non-debatable. The same applies with "Greater New Orleans and even Cajun Country.
  • I would suggest any regions be listed;
    • North(excluding Vernon Parish)which would not include the term "Sportsman's Paradise".
    • Central or Cross Roads(including Vernon and Allen Parish)
    • South
    • East or Plantation Country
    • Greater New Orleans
  • If there is a search problem(200) with this then I guess South Central would be an alternative. This could include;
    • Allen,
    • Avoyelles,
    • Beauregard,
    • Concordia,
    • Evangeline,
    • Rapides,
    • Vernon,
    • and maybe St. Landry and even, Pointe Coupee. These would be considered South Central but may be a big part of Plantation Country as I have not looked.

Concerns

  • My only concern with "splitting" would be not to include Allen in Cajun Country and certainly not excluding Vernon from the term "Sportsman's Paradise".

Reasoning South Beauregard has a large Cajun population and the southern border is farther south than the south border of Allen Parish. Allen Parish is due East of Beauregard. The towns and communities of Basile, Eunice, Kinder, Leblanc, Oberline, Ville Platte, Opelousas, and others certainly have a large population of Cajuns so I would simply use South.

Interest

  • I think that all those interested in these articles should make it known, have a discussion, and come to a conclusion. Being new I do not know how to get anything like this started so someone with knowledge please take the lead.
  • I would like to point out that I am not interested in joining anything where there is contention, word fights, or any other discord. I only say this as I have seen talk pages that need to be censored or otherwise reined in for such things. Thank you, Otr500 (talk) 14:55, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, good! :) I agree that the tourist region names should not be used, as they seem too promotional in tone and because you suggest they are not widely known. I agree that "North" vs. "Central" vs. South vs Southeast sounds better. Let's see if there are other suggestions on how to partition. There's no rush on dividing this either. Cheers, doncram (talk) 22:49, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am sure there is no hurry. Consensus is good. Do you think a 4 division split would be adequate for the search criteria you mentioned or 5 divisions? Otr500 (talk) 02:15, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The database is online; permalinks look like: http://www.crt.state.la.us/dataprojects/hp/nhl/view.asp?ID=712 . It would probably be good to create a template/wikidata property for this, if it doesn't already exist. JesseW, the juggling janitor 06:16, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes, the Louisiana state copies of NRHP documents are all, or nearly all, online via that system, with top index at Louisiana search site. For all but a few most recent additions, the document available provides selected scanned sections (what are section 7 and section 8 texts normally) of the NRHP nomination documents. A reference template is as follows:

<ref name=ladoc>{{cite web|url=http://www.crt.state.la.us/dataprojects/hp/nhl/attachments/ |title= |publisher=State of Louisiana's Division of Historic Preservation |author= |date= |accessdate= }} with [http://www.crt.state.la.us/dataprojects/hp/nhl/view.asp?ID= photos and maps]</ref>

regional groupings of parishes

[edit]

Perhaps the alphabetical list of parishes can be grouped, and the currently isolated/individual parish list-articles can be merged into group list-articles, if a partition that works can be found.

one partition

One partition into North Louisiana vs. Central Louisiana vs. Acadiana (22 parishes) vs. Florida Parishes vs. a version of "Greater New Orleans" (8 parishes) does not divide into small enough regions.

Perhaps partition the 1381 total NRHPs by:

  • New Orleans (Orleans Parish) 168,
  • Baton Rouge 77,
  • Shreveport 60,

and nine Homeland Security/Emergency preparedness regions Emergency Preparedness defined here. Note this divides Baton Rouge (77) and rest of East Baton Rouge Parish (9), and it divides Shreveport (60) and rest of Caddo Parish (8).

There also exist region articles linked from Template:Louisiana: Acadiana, Ark-La-Tex, Central Louisiana, Florida Parishes, Greater New Orleans, Northwest Louisiana (redirects to North Louisiana), North Louisiana, and Southwest Louisiana.

Emergency preparedness regions 7 and 8 are Northern Louisiana. Regions 2 and 9 are approximately the Florida Parishes. --doncram 23:40, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Taking that further: The 1381 RHPs total divided out by emergency preparedness regions are:
region 7, pretty much the west half of North Louisiana: Caddo 68 (includes city of Shreveport 60), Bossier 6, Webster 19, Claiborne 11, Bienville 13, DeSoto 31, Red River 2, total=150 (or 90 without Shreveport 60)
Region 8, the east half of North Louisiana: Union 11, Morehouse 9, West Carroll 4, East Carroll 7, Lincoln 28, Ouachita 31, Richland 9, Madison 14, Jackson 5, Caldwell 9, Franklin 5, Tensas 10, total=142
Region 6, Central: Sabine 8, Natchitoches 34, Winn 6, La Salle 3, Catahoula 14, Grant 6, Vernon 16, Rapides 76, Avoyelles 29, Concordia 13, total=205
Region 5, lower left (this is Southwest Louisiana, as defined by SWLA Economic Development Alliance): Beauregard 13, Allen 4, Calcasieu 18, Jefferson Davis 17, Cameron 2, total=54
Region 4: lower center: Evangeline 4, St. Landry 36, Acadia 6, St. Martin 25, Lafayette 35, Vermillion 20, Iberia 30, St. Mary 28, total=164
Region 3: south, next to right of lower center: Assumption 9, St. James 22, St. John the Baptist 16, St. Charles 6, Terrebonne 17, Lafourche 35, total= 105
Region 2: western half of Florida Parishes: Point Coupee 31, West Feliciana 31, East Feliciana 32, Iberville 23, West Baton Rouge 13, East Baton Rouge 86 (includes city of Baton Rouge 77), Ascension 18, Livingston 13, total=237 (or 160 separate from 77 city of Baton Rouge)
Region 9: eastern half of Florida Parishes: St. Helena 3, Tangipahoa 30, Washington 17, St. Tammany 38, total=88
Region 1: Jefferson 19, Orleans 168 (consolidated with city of New Orleans), St. Bernard 10, Plaquemines 9, total=206 (or 38 vs. 168 if New Orleans separated)
Which are then 12 groupings of: 90, 60, 142, 205, 54, 164, 105, 160, 77, 88, 38, 168. (1381/12=about 115 average).
Or if Shreveport is not split out, that is 11 groupings of: 150, 142, 205, 54, 164, 105, 160, 77, 88, 38, 168. (1381/11=about 126 average).
Or if Shreveport and Baton Rouge are not split out, that is 10 groupings of: 150, 142, 205, 54, 164, 105, 237, 88, 38, 168. (1381/10=about 138 average).
But i might have made some errors in recording & tallying. --doncram 18:01, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Louisiana regions, perhaps from a Louisiana Board of Regents' division of the state, which was externally linked from Southwest Louisiana wikipedia page

Or a different partition into 8 (perhaps a onetime Board of Regents' division):

  • Northwest?: Caddo 68 (includes city of Shreveport 60), Bossier 6, Webster 19, Claiborne 11, Lincoln 28, Bienville 13, DeSoto 31, Red River 2, Sabine 8, Natchitoches 34, total=220 (or 160 without Shreveport 60)
  • Northeast?: Union 11, Morehouse 9, West Carroll 4, East Carroll 7, Ouachita 31, Richland 9, Madison 14, Jackson 5, Caldwell 9, Franklin 5, Tensas 10, total=114
  • Central?: Winn 6, La Salle 3, Catahoula 14, Grant 6, Vernon 16, Rapides 76, Avoyelles 29, Concordia 13, total=163
  • Southwest Louisiana, (same as EP region #5, and as defined by SWLA Economic Development Alliance)): Allen 4, Beauregard 13, Calcasieu 18, Jefferson Davis 17, Cameron 2, total=54
  • South central(?), (same as EP region #4): Evangeline 4, St. Landry 36, Acadia 6, St. Martin 25, Lafayette 35, Vermillion 20, Iberia 30, St. Mary 28, total=164
  • Florida parishes (?), approximately: Point Coupee 31, West Feliciana 31, East Feliciana 32, Iberville 23, West Baton Rouge 13, East Baton Rouge 86 (includes city of Baton Rouge 77), Ascension 18, Livingston 13, St. Helena 3, Tangipahoa 30, Washington 17, total=287 (or 210 separate from 77 city of Baton Rouge)
  • Southeast? (same as EP region #3) south, next to right of lower center: Assumption 9, St. James 22, St. John the Baptist 16, St. Charles 6, Terrebonne 17, Lafourche 35, total=105
  • Greater New Orleans?: St. Tammany 38, Jefferson 19, Orleans 168, St. Bernard 10, Plaquemines 9, total=244 (or 76 separate from 168 for New Orleans)

That gives, for 8 regions: 220, 114, 163, 54, 164, 287, 105, 244. If New Orleans is split out, 9 regions: 220, 114, 163, 54, 164, 287, 105, 76, 168. If Baton Rouge is also split out, 10 regions: 220, 114, 163, 54, 164, 210, 77, 105, 76, 168. If Shreveport is also split out, 11 regions: 160, 60, 114, 163, 54, 164, 210, 77, 105, 76, 168.

Again there may be some lookup or addition errors. --doncram 18:31, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

For economic development regions, this Economic Development regions webpage with map gives "Bayou" and "Capital" and "Acadiana" as names for three of its 8 regions. Others are directions-based: "Northeast", "Southeast", "Northwest", "Central", "Southwest". The Northwest, Northeast, Central, Southwest regions are same as in a partition above, and have explicit names given, so I'd like to use those four, with modification that I'd break out city of Shreveport from Northeast. That makes 5. And this version of Acadiana and Bayou are okay. Then I'd divide the Florida Parishes by "East part of Florida Parishes" vs. "West part of Florida Parishes" vs. city of Baton Rouge. Then New Orleans/Orleans Parish vs. southeast, with southeast defined as in Economic development region except not into Florida Parishes north of New Orleans, make it i.e. St James and St John and St. Charles and south and east of New Orleans. That makes 12 regions, all with names. --doncram 01:06, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
