Monroe, New York[edit]

There is a note on the article page asking a question about Monroe, New York. Monroe is not a neighborhood in Rochester. It is a town and village downstate in Orange County. However, we can't discount the possibility that a listing for an historic building in Monroe County was misfiled as being in the town or village of Monroe. Thanks for reply, that was regarding the following note which was in the article (and which I just removed):

"to be researched for possible merger into table above"

Actually i think pubdog must have consulted the document already, but had not added it, which i did. The place is the Christ Church (Rochester, New York). It appears there was a typo in the National Register's NRIS database entry, recording this as town=Monroe and town=Rochester when it should have been just Rochester, which is in Monroe County. The NRHP document showed location as "Rochester, Monroe County" which was misinterpreted to be a list of two towns that the place is in (when in fact it is just in Rochester). I'll add a note about it at wp:NRIS info issues NY for later correspondence and correction in their database. I developed the article slightly. So, this is resolved for now. City and town names[edit]

The source is the NRIS, which unfortunately isn't given at this page; for this page, the citation would be something like "National Register Information System". National Register of Historic Places. National Park Service. 2008-04-24. Nyttend (talk) 05:30, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Split[edit]

Why the totally unnecessary (and incomplete) splitting of listings within the city of Rochester out of this article? The article even says "This is intended to be a complete list of properties and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Monroe County, New York." Hi --- the splitting of Rochester into a separate list was done because including them as part of the Monroe County list was getting unwieldy. This was done much as I'm sure the split for Syracuse was done from Onondaga County. I agree that the introductory paragraph needs to be reworded to make this split clearer.--Pubdog (talk) 21:40, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Hi, i visit in response to notice posted at wt:NRHP. I think we're supposed to discuss this here, but there's another comment there too, by the way. I am the one who split the corresponding Syracuse list from the Onondaga County list, and I think i probably developed the table format here in Monroe County a while back. I think while file-size might not yet be a pressing problem, it will become one as photos and description are added. The current version of the Syracuse NRHP list is over 67,000 bytes now, and it has 75 NRHP entries. Vs. the wikipedia article size limit suggestion of 100,000 bytes maximum (altho i've seen larger, it is good to try to keep size below that). I am hopeful that i myself might be able to visit Rochester and get photos and add pics there, by the way. I'd rather split sooner rather than later if it is definitely going to be split (which is in fact definite), so that my edits adding photos and descriptions stay in the relevant article's edit history, so that neighborhood column info is developed sooner, and for more reasons. To LtPowers, you're correct the split is not absolutely necessary yet. But perhaps your browsing in other NY city/county list-articles indexed at List of RHPs in NY will make you feel more comfortable about splitting this one now. I meant that eventually it will be split, say a year or two from now, when descriptions and photos have been added so that the list is unwieldy. That was a prediction; it is not in fact definite; something else could happen. Note i have commented at wt:NRHP that i change my view to supporting keeping a combined list (perhaps in 2 tables in one article), rather than splitting to two list-articles, at least for the time being.
Also, I think this discussion should be continued at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#Seeking Guidance on Rochester split from Monroe County, New York, because more people have commented there than here. doncram (talk) 20:05, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What i do to see page-size is to look at "history". Last three edits show:

How do you look at "properties"? Is that a browser-specific thing, vs. the page-size in history being a wikipedia-centric thing, perhaps? --doncram (talk) 00:58, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the guidance on how the page sizes are calculated for Wikipedia. To see Properties, right-click on open page, then click Properties at bottom; it shows 277K. I don't know about you, but Monroe County as currently configured takes quite a while to open. Must just be my wireless connection. Ah, right-clicking on the page and clicking properties works for me now, using Firefox. Thanks. Well that is probably the better measure to be using and to be talking about, although maybe there are reasons I don't know (like, maybe the properties measure will differ across users/browsers/preference settings about photos/size of browser window opened/user's cache settings). The Wikipedia guideline for keeping its internal measure of filesize below 100,000 bytes is highly imperfect. All the photos in a big list article contribute only the text string of their filename, not the actual size of the thumb images that are loaded for each one. And, BTW, I currently am working on a pretty fast internet connection so am relatively oblivious to this issue for the moment, sorry. Thanks! doncram (talk) 16:50, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HABS/HAER pics[edit]

Are there Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) or Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) pics available for any NRHP-listed places in Rochester or Monroe County? HABS or HAER photos may be found by searching:Search HABS/HAER here. If any are found, just add a note here giving the HABS/HAER name of site. There is another editor, User:KudzuVine who is very fast and helpful with uploading adding those pics (which are all public domain and okay for us to use) to articles, if we just make a list of the ones we want. doncram (talk) 17:15, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For example, searching on "Rochester NY" in HABS i find:
  • "Jonathan Child House, 37 South Washington Street, Rochester, Monroe County, NY" is listed in HABS, and the house also appears to be NRHP-listed, part of name for a historic district, and which does not have a photo currently.

I didn't get as many photos taken last summer as I'd hoped. Maybe this summer -- but I do want to wait at least until spring; leaves on trees makes for much better pictures IMO (except perhaps in a few unique circumstances). Powers T 18:36, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually when the sun shines now, it is great light to take pics in. And leaves off trees allows for better pics of many houses and churches that are obscured by the trees in the summer, so i actually like taking pics in the winter.
