Armory Square Historic District[edit]

I was preparing to create a stub for the Armory Square Historic District, but I found that Armory Square has an article as a neighborhood of Syracuse. I'm not sure if I should add a history section to that article or create a separate article for the historic district. It seems redundant to have two articles about the same area. Any thoughts? Hey, i was wondering about exactly that, too. The Armory Square article consists largely of an unsourced directory of stores in the area, perhaps out of date, which probably would best be deleted. Perhaps there is a commercial website providing such a directory that could be added as an external link, instead. Then adding more about the historic district would improve that article. Also, perhaps the Armory Square area should be called an area or district or historic district in the article, rather than calling it a neighborhood. It is not one of the official neighborhoods of Syracuse but rather must be in one or more of the official neighborhoods. So i am leaning towards thinking the Armory Square article should be redeveloped, rather than having separate articles. doncram (talk) 19:33, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Neighborhoods[edit]

Would it be appropriate to add this

to the bottom of this article? It has the 26 official neighborhoods in Syracuse, which I think would be how we would determine the Neighborhood column. Lvklock (talk) 23:51, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like the idea, because people would be able to see where the neighborhoods are for a particular listing. I welcome anyone trying to work on completing the neighborhood column - however, I've added many of the neighborhoods that are currently there myself and my experience has been that this can be difficult to do. Many of the properties unfortunately exist right on the boundaries, so I think it will take someone with some real world knowledge of the city and neighborhoods to complete some of these. Postcards[edit]

I picked up some postcards at an antiqoe show recently, including the State Tower Building (Hanover Square), City Hall, Central High, The Armory and a few others. When uploading them to commons, are old postcards automatically public domain? Lvklock (talk) 02:57, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an expert on copyright law, but as far as I know either an advertising firm or the artist who took the photograph/drew the picture would own the copyright in a postcard. And copyright protection lasts from the life of the author plus 70 years, so it's likely that these postcards (like most everything else) are still under copyright. However, I have no idea whether a valid fair use rationale could be used for these images - maybe you could search for other images of postcards on wikipedia and see what others have done. Hmm...actually I found a link to this website; http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/public_domain/ , which seems to say that if it was published without a copyright notice before 1978, then it's public domain, or if it was published before 1923. The published before 1923 is a license choice on Commons, but the no copyright notice isn't. So, I guess I can use the dated ones, but maybe not the others. Thanks for the replies. I've most recently been working on some of the historic district articles, and I thought the vintage pics would be a cool addition. When the weather warms up, I'll just go take my own pics. Hey, this article looks very complete and near to Featured List condition. Lvklock, would u be willing to put it up for wp:PR now, to get peer review comments first? I think it is totally ready for PR. We just have to be ready to respond to any comments received. If you agree, just list it at wp:PR. Sites removed from table[edit]

I've removed two sites that were nominated by NY for the NRHP, but have not yet been listed. I'm copying them here in case they eventually do end up getting listed so they can be easily cut-and-pasted into the table.

Ward Wellington Ward houses[edit]

Volunteers wanted![edit]

The H.A. Moyer Factory Complex, at 1710 North Salina and 301 Wolf Sts., is in the Syracuse.com news, and the June 21, 2023 article "Here's what Syracuse's famous house on a factory roof looks like after a facelift" includes a link to this Wikipedia list-article. But this list-article needs help! And a volunteer is needed to start an article about the Moyer building, which was listed on the NRHP in 2022! Does anyone have any photos of it? Or is anyone willing to go to Syracuse Historical Society and/or the Syracuse public library? Sources, to be used, don't have to be online; books and historic newspaper clippings at the library can be great sources. But a number of articles/sources about the Moyer building are available on-line, including this 2022 article, this 2020 article, this 2013 one, all of which are articles by Rick Moriarty by the way!, and more.--Doncram (talk,contribs) 21:08, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
