Dead or alive?[edit]

His Sports Reference entry states that he died in 1999. However, this 2012 newspaper article discusses his rowing career in some detail but whilst he lived in Marlborough (where that newspaper is based) for most of his rowing career, it doesn't mention that he's no longer alive. So is he dead or alive? Schwede66 19:31, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tassedethe: Did you see the above? Just wondering with regards to your edit. Schwede66 21:29, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No I hadn't. Normally BLP articles stay in Category:Living people until either there is a reliable source to say they are dead, or they are>90yo (and moved to Category:Possibly living people) or finally to an appropriate death category. It seems unlikely that an Olympic rower dying at possibly ~37yo wouldn't have produced more WP:RS. I'd err on the side of caution and leave in Category:Living people. @Canadian Paul: As our Sports Reference expert, can you please contribute? Schwede66 16:40, 23 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: That year has been in the SR database for a while, so I've messaged the team to see if they can dig up where that date came from (or if it is an error). I'll post here when I hear back. Canadian Paul 19:14, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: Gibson died January 2, 1999 in Christchurch of cancer, according to a New Zealand Olympic historian we contacted. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the obituary to verify this by Wikipedia's standards, but SR is a reliable source, so we can at least re-insert the YOD. @Canadian Paul: Thanks heaps. Next time I'm at the library I shall have a look at the local newspapers from early 1999 to see whether I can find a death notice. Schwede66 23:17, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please give us a source for his death date, and one for his birth name.-gadfium 22:55, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
His death notice was published on January 04 1999 in both The Press (Christchurch) and The Marlborough Express. I have a paper copy, but cannot find any on-line reference to supply. 49.225.228.149 (talk) 02:34, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't need to be online (and you won't find any NZ newspapers from 1999 online) but you could send me a photo of your clip. You'll need to get yourself an account (it's free) and enable your email. Then head to my talk page and in the left column, you'll see "Email this user". Click on it and send me an email through the Wikipedia system. I will reply to that email and that's now an email proper. You can then attach a photo of that clip. Sound ok?
