History section[edit]

Should we add a history section this page? There is a lot of information about Nelk missing from the article that does not fit into any of the other sections. Abobeck11 (talk) 17:36, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What's up Abobeck11 Thanks sm for your help on this article. The problem is that when it comes to BLPs, it is a much stricter rule that all information needs to be cited. If you can find reliable sources that discuss NELK's history, feel free to go ahead and add the section and cite properly. I personally had trouble finding such sources when I originally wrote the article. Hillelfrei talk 17:45, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"History and Legal Issues Cleanup"[edit]

This section is way too big and is just a list of miscellaneous proseline, some of which is unsourced. Some of this stuff is notable (like the bigger legal cases) and I think should remain but a lot of it needs to be trimmed out. Basil the Bat Lord (talk) 06:02, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think all of it is notable as long as it's sourced. Only talking about the legal cases makes the section biased towards their legal troubles.Abobeck11 (talk) 17:46, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is Jesse Sebastiani still part of NELK ?[edit]

I'm questioning whether Sebastiani should be listed as an official member of the online group (including his name being listed in the infobox). Bergeronpp (talk) 02:59, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've been wondering that as well. Perhaps we should change the opening sentence of the "Members" section, and the members listed in the infobox, to include only "current and recurring" members which would be Kyle, Lucas, Steve and Salim. I suppose Jimmy Gambles and Cousin Jay are "current and recurring" and should be added as well. Abobeck11 (talk) 17:27, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I support your suggestion of re-wording the section to "current and recurring" members. Cousin Jay has appeared in nearly every video NELK has dropped on YT since he moved in with Salim, so adding him to the list is appropriate. I am hesitant on including Jimmy Gambles because his appearances on the channel are as frequent as Bradley Martyn.Bergeronpp (talk) 17:57, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It’s tricky because in order for a member to be added to the info box, we need their real name and birthday according to Wikipedia rules. I’m not sure of Cousin Jay’s real name, but yes it would be appropriate to add him to the list. Kyle said at the beginning of the last season that Jimmy was a “new NELK member” and I think he’s appeared in every video since. Abobeck11 (talk) 07:02, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

“Canadian” or “Canadian-American” company[edit]

Consensus is needed on this. I think it’s fair to call them “Canadian-American” because they are headquartered in the US and their members consist of both Canadians and Americans. Abobeck11 (talk) 04:14, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The core identity and members of the group are Canadian, and this is referenced several times in each video. They normally go back and forth across the border for content but due to the current pandemic, they have been unable to. Even when they met President Trump, they were all saying that they shouldn't even be there because they are not American. Therefore, I feel as if the group should be called Canadian.BROSKIYA (talk) 09:09, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The group currently resides in So. California and Steve, Salim, and Jay are American (NOT Canadian) so its appropriate to call them a CAN-USA online group Bergeronpp (talk) 04:54, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
BROSKIYA, there are both Canadian and American core members. Salim, Cousin Jay and Steve are all American. Most of their staff is American as well. Furthermore, “NELK” and “FULL SEND” are both registered trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Abobeck11 (talk) 20:02, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
They were founded in Canada and their Canadian-ness (for lack of a better word) defines the brand and group significantly. While they have non-Canadian members, that doesn't mean the group isn't a Canadian group. Nelk, itself, is Canadian regardless of whether it is headquartered in the US (for which the primary is that they would be closer to other creators) and whether they have American members, because the group was founded in Canada and still caters significantly to its base in Canada: with the slang they use and the clothes they sell. Ajshul 😃 21:27, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ajshul, yes, they are a Canadian group but they’re also American, so it’s appropriate to name both. Your argument is that they have Canadian members and pursue Canadian culture, but they also have American members and pursue American culture. They’re likely staying in the US permanently at this point.

An alternative would be to just change the wording completely to “an entertainment group founded in Canada” to avoid any confusion. Abobeck11 (talk) 22:13, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My argument was more that they were founded in Canada and that the founding members were Canadian. Further, I don’t think the location of their headquarters indicates that they are American; many celebrities and YouTube groups move to Hollywood when they become famous, which doesn’t erase their national origin or identity. I see your point about them having American members, I just think that at its core, the brand is Canadian, so despite some of the members being American, Nelk, itself, should be referred to as a Canadian group. Ajshul 😃 22:17, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That is a good point, but I think this whole conversation just proves that the current phrase, whether it’s “Canadian” or “Canadian-American”, is too vague. “Founded in Canada” makes best sense. Abobeck11 (talk) 23:25, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

::Agreed 100%. Although I think that it should be characterized as a Canadian group, I see the controversy in that characterization; therefore, "Founded in Canada" seems like a better choice of words. Ajshul 😃 02:42, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Abobeck11 — on Nelk's ABOUT page on their YouTube channel, it says Toronto, Canada in the description and lists their location as Canada. Their founding in Canada would classify them as a Canadian group and their Canadian identify is integral to many of their videos. “Founded in Canada” is too passive and doesn't characterize them as what they are, which is a Canadian group. I see your point clearly which is why I agreed before, but upon seeing the clear presence of Canada on their "About" page on YouTube and watching more of their videos and seeing how much Canada is important to their brand, it's clear that "Canadian" would be better than "Founded in Canada".Ajshul 😃 03:13, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ajshul, “Canadian group” to me would infer that the entire group is Canadian. Literally more than half the group is American, their videos for the past two years have been in the US, there’s definitely American culture too. I think the most appropriate wording is still “founded in Canada”. The rest of the article explains the breakdown of the members. Abobeck11 (talk) 04:04, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Abobeck11 — the article is about the group... the brand... Nelk, not the members. In other articles (AC/DC for example), the band may be made up with members who are not of the national identity of the group, but that does not make the group itself lose its national identity. In the AC/DC article, it is called an Australian band, despite only 2 out of 5 current members being Australian. Just because there are now Scottish and English members of AC/DC, the band’s national identity is not lost. The same goes for Nelk. I can't find any examples where a group, band, channel, etc. that is originally of one national identity has their original national identity erased when new members join. Ajshul 😃 14:57, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Abobeck11 — I have to say that I disagree with your assertion that they display "American Culture". What is American culture? Nelk displays North American University culture, which is practically the same on both sides of the border. I also disagree with your assertion that half the group is American, so therefore Nelk is "Canadian-American". The crew itself has many Canadians, such as Ausgod - Nelk's Director of Content, as well as Jimmy Gambles. The mere fact that they are now in LA has no significance - practically everyone in the entertainment industry lives there. Therefore, the group should be described as Canadian.BROSKIYA (talk) 05:53, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NELK's Twitter lists Toronto/Los Angeles. NELK is also categorized under "Canadian YouTubers" and "American YouTubers" Bergeronpp (talk) 20:26, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bergeronpp – the fact that they list LA on their Twitter doesn't clarify what their national identity is as a brand, just their location: currently they are headquartered in LA. Instead of arguing over what we think, it would be more productive to actually look at secondary sources which point to them being Canadian ([1][2][3][4][5][6][7]). Almost every source I have looked at related to Nelk says that they are Canadian, while not one I have seen one that mentions that they are part American. The reason for this is because, as I mentioned in my previous message, the brand's national identity is not erased when new members who are not of that same national identity join (similar to AC/DC). History section[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. An encyclopedia is a summary of knowledge, not a mundane listing of every routine event. Why are users simply adding an synopsis (one sentence paragraphs) to every video their channel uploads onto YouTube. History[edit]

The history section is this article is quite messy and unnecessarily bulky, as was already established in the above discussions. As most of the bulkiness is due to legal issues, and those paragraphs contain the less directly-related content, the obvious way to resolve this, as is done in many larger BLPs, is to create a new section. I am creating a subsection in history titled "Legal issues and controversies". Hillelfrei talk 16:19, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
