New Meadow → Prostar Stadium

The stadium was finally given a name at a press conference on 21 July. Evidence: BBC Sport

It had previously been given the nickname 'New Meadow', amongst many other descriptive names, none of which were official. Published evidence can be found of at least 3 used names.

We don't allow sponsorship names usually, but in the case of new grounds which are made without an official title, we have to give way to the only official name that the stadium is given. In Shrewsbury's case it comes 12 months after building is completed.

Strong oppose New Meadow is the established WP:COMMONNAME (14,000+ Ghits compared to 179 for Prostar Stadium) and there is agreement that just as we do not use sponsored names for leagues, we do not use sponsored names for stadium articles if an established name exists - see Dean Court rather than Fitness First Stadium, Crown Ground instead of Fraser Eagle Stadium, Deva Stadium rather than Saunders Honda Stadium etc etc. пﮟოьεԻ 5 7 19:27, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. We don't have to give way to the only official name that the stadium is given at all, this is a common misconception but completely contrary to policy. See Wikipedia:official names for a proposal to clarify this. Andrewa (talk) 21:01, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - its name to nearly all fans is the New Meadow. In fact it will be interesting to see how widely used the name "Prostar Stadium" is going to be in the new season by media, etc. David (talk) 17:49, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: I don't think anyone would dare suggest we call Arsenal's stadium Ashburton Grove, and what about Swansea's stadium, which is no longer called New Stadium? It looks like this debate is heading in the direction of what is the most 'common name', as Andrewa rightly points out, but I wonder how many hits Prostar Stadium will receive in twelve months' time? slυмgυм [ ←→ ] 21:26, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category[edit]
