This article is written in American English, which has its own spelling conventions (color, defense, traveled) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus.

POV[edit]

This article is based almost exclusively on NYAS website and publications which may introduce bias. For example, from NYAS's vision it is clear it's not a scientific organisation, as its main role is organising conferences, "increasing the number of scientifically informed in society at large", etc. --Abanima (talk) 17:11, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what it's role is in the US, but for foreigners, NYAS is mostly a diploma mill: anyone can buy a membership (and with it, a nice-looking certificate), and since it's name sounds very authoritative, all sorts of pseudoscientists use it to appear as legitimate scientists. --Tgr (talk) 14:21, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would second Tgr's comment. Several decades ago I was amazed to receive an invitation to join the New York Academy of Sciences: I was in the middle of my university course and had never published anything. As far as I knew members of Academies of Sciences were generally distinguished researchers well on in their careers. The only way I could have come to their attention was through my subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine, if the Journal sold its "sucker list" to the Academy. As I was an ocean away from the possibility of enjoying their library and club facilities, and it looked like something I would have to keep out of my curriculum vitae, I thought it best to adopt Groucho Marx's attitude to that invitation.
