Merger proposal

To not merge, given the independent notability of the two former dance companies priot to the the merge; the New York Live Arts should focus on post-2011 information. Klbrain (talk) 22:42, 25 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think about merging Dance Theatre Workshop and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company into this article as this is the name under which both entities currently program. Much of the content between the three articles is redundant and in need of an update, which would likely be easier with one hub article with sections on each organization's history. The merger was contentious, driven by the 2008 recession and much of what DTW represented was subsumed by the merger. It might be more appropriate to end the DTW article with the merger and start the NYLA article with the merger, with the company article running a parallel track. Despite the redundancy, they are really three different entities in the dance community's memory. - Anonymous — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.105.16.18 (talk) 05:09, 14 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the previous comment - put simply, it makes no sense to merge these three very different entities. Both Dance Theatre Workshop and the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company were already hugely important players on the international contemporary dance scene decades before New York Live Arts was established. The existing page for the dance company offers the merest glimpse of the company's unquestionable importance and notability. - Kbaker121 (talk) 20:25, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks IP 142 and @Kbaker121: for your input. That makes a lot of sense. I wonder if there's a way to make the information slightly less redundant across the three articles. I have no idea how to close a merger proposal, but open to having this closed StarM 15:52, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • My only suggestion on redundancy would be to cut down the paragraph on financial issues on the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company page and leave the detailed account to the New York Live Arts page. Then, in terms of clarifying why their notability is independent of each other, I would add information on Dance Theater Workshop's premises prior to moving into the new building on 19th St (which I believe was in the early 2000s, which would mean they were in difference spaces for over 35 years, which currently isn't clear on the page). The company page strikes me as underdeveloped - however the page of its artistic director Bill T. Jones is not. There may be a case for replacing that paragraph on the financials on the dance company page with a summary of the company's history as distinct from Jones'. - Kbaker121 (talk) 10:48, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Kbaker121: agree, that would help a lot. It currently reads to me (as someone not super familiar either organization, although I'm aware of both) as less notable given the info copied across all the articles. Makes it seem as if there's less to say than you and IP142 make clear. StarM 14:15, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
