Not sure if this article may be misleading. In my understanding, de Newars who call themselves Buddhists are actually Hindus who focus on the Buddha as their main practice, just like within Hinduism, there are Shivaites, or people who follow Krishna as example. The facts that Newars do not have monasteries and apparently stick to a caste system (which the Buddha strictly opposed in his teachings) makes them very doubtful 'Buddhists'. It appears to me that as a minimum the opinion of a renowned scholar would be needed to justify this article in this form.? rudy (talk) 21:44, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some Newars - particularly Shakyas and Vajaracharyas certainly consider themselves Buddhists and there are quite a number of scholarly books available on Newar Buddhism. The caste system (and some Buddhists calling themselves Hindus) happened when all the Newars were under Hindu rulers and Buddhism was suppressed.
