The street names section contains vague information and very poor grammar! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.138.174.140 (talk) 04:55, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Town Centre

[edit]

I've removed some information recently place on this article about Newton Aycliffe's town centre, because it suffers from multiple problems;

  • Point-of-view - "...a very good town centre...", "...good range of shops", "After many years Tescos and Argos...and they are very popular".
  • Vague - "...the town centre was sold to some company which is not based locally", "They started putting up the rents for the shops and it soon became cheaper to run a shop in Oxford Street, London than in Newton Aycliffe", "The only other shops to open where Charity Shops".
  • Bias - The text gives off the effect that the purchasing of the town was a bad thing, which may be true, but this is a Encyclopaedia with a Neutral point of view.
  • Language - the text's overall language could be greatly improved.
  • References - None of it is referenced.

Any user that can rewrite it and address its problems, please do so.

The Town Centre

[edit]

Original Text: During the original building phases Newton Aycliffe has a very good town centre, it was pedestrianised back in the late 1960s / early 1970s and had a good range of shops. In the early 1980s the town centre was sold to some company which is not based locally. They started putting up the rents for the shops and it soon became cheaper to run a shop in Oxford Street, London than in Newton Aycliffe. Over the following years many shops closed much to the dismay of the people of the town. The number of supermarkets dropped to just one, Somerfield which increased its prices of many of its stock. The only other shops to open where Charity Shops. With the demolition of the Avenue Comprehensive School in 1992 many people hoped that new shops whould open on that empty land. After many years Tescos and Argos have built on that derelict land and they are very popular. One bank and optitions have moved from the old town centre to this new shopping area. Part of the old town centre is now getting demolished and there is talk that another chain store will open a branch once the land is cleared and available for building some time after 2011.

Collage

[edit]

I reverted the addition of a collage because there was obviously a problem in the application of the "static image caption" field or something like that, as the "St" was floating top left of the collage. I'm not familiar enough with collage formatting in infoboxes to work out what's gone wrong and fix it myself.

But there seem several problems with the collage. Previously there was one nice pic of the town centre. The collage included various places not or hardly mentioned in the text: the Orchid sculpture (where? by whom? commemorating what?); the church "designed and developed around a community centre, church and a parade of shops" is all that's said about it, though at least the other image caption spells it right (see https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/13545/), and it's not the best available photo, terribly dark compared to the one in the article below; Hitachi Newton Aycliffe has an article so needs a link (and the pic in that article is much clearer: more building, less track); Thames House - what's that?; the pub at least gets a mention, though it seems a pretty poor photo of an undistinguished building.

I suggest that the collage needs to be rethought before being replaced. It doesn't seem to improve the article. PamD 10:20, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
