Origin of name[edit]

Removed from article: "They were thought to be named after the many (nga) feathered canoe decorations (puhi) which canoes that arrived into New Zealand dropped of in this area." There are several theories about the origin. Most concern either chiefly female virgins (puhi) or people whose names started with Puhi, not canoe decorations. Ngati Hine[edit]

I dont think that Ngati Hine should be given the title of an Iwi.This will damage the funds given to the northland tribes due to there being more than one Iwi with in the Peowhairangi region. This doesn't seem right.I have Ngati Hine in my blood but I still have to disagree with these claims that Ngati Hine is an Iwi.Ngati Hine should always and will always be a sub-tribe of Ngapuhi-Nui-tonu

  • I moved the above to here as it seems more of a discussion than a central part of the article. My impression was that Ngati Hine felt they could manage their own affairs more efficiently than Ngapuhi. ping 07:24, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sovereignty[edit]

Is it correct to refer to Ngapuhi's "claim that sovereignty was not given up". Surely this claim is only made by a small minority of activists, and cannot be a mainstream, much less majority, view?124.197.15.138 (talk) 05:30, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't it be noted that the suggestion that the British Government did not want to acquire sovereignty is contradicted by the Treaty of Waitangi itself, and the subsequent proclamation of British sovereignty?Royalcourtier (talk) 22:33, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Numbers[edit]

The 2013 census may have shown 125,601 people describing themselves as of Ngapuhi ancestry. That is not the same as the number "registered"- the census obviously does not register tribal affiliations, as such.Royalcourtier (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:32, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Portia Woodman not Notable?[edit]

If arguably the most dominant woman athlete on the globe isn't notable I don't know who is.2602:306:33A6:14E0:EC3E:E5D7:782F:E280 (talk) 16:42, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Will now in Pompano Beach2602:306:33A6:14E0:EC3E:E5D7:782F:E280 (talk) 16:42, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I would not usually bother to say "I agree" but this omission is so wrong and has not been corrected. 2600:1700:90E0:77A0:EC3E:E5D7:782F:E280 (talk) 18:30, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Will in New Haven2600:1700:90E0:77A0:EC3E:E5D7:782F:E280 (talk) 18:30, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
