Reliability[edit]

Well, I can't speak to IP's allegations about Owen Lloyd, and certainly they were made in an inappropriate place. But a large amount of material in this article is not only poorly-sourced but extremely dubious. In particular the identification of the (very real, human, and contemporarily existing, but not pre-Māori) Moriori with the folkloric Turehu (Patupaiarehe) borders on the offensive. Check out Pre-Māori settlement of New Zealand theories for better information. In addition, while I can't claim to know every particular of Māori folklore and mythology, I find it suspicious that there is nothing in there that I recognise, except for the reference to the "Great Fleet" which was the name of a European theory of Māori origins incorporating some Māori oral history, rather than Māori lore in its own right. —VeryRarelyStable (talk) 09:41, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest removing the entire section sourced to Lyall, A.C. "Whakatohea of Opotiki". Stuartyeates (talk) 23:29, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
