Decipherment

[edit]

It took me 2 hours to decipher the "History" section up to 1675. Events and items are introduced or defined out of order, it's very confusing. Here is my work for future reference:

  • Tū-irirangi, chief of Ngāti Raukawa, gives birth to several children including Tuahu-māhina.
  • Tū-irirangi dies. Ngatokowaru succeeds Tū-irirangi as Ngāti Raukawa chief.
  • Tuahu-māhina becomes chief of the Ngāti Ariari tribe, centred at Kawhia.
  • Tuahu-māhina has a cousin, Pakaue.
  • Pakaue had children, including Te Wehi.
  • Te Wehi had a half-brother. Kawharu. Kawharu's tribe was the Ngāti Tamainupo. Kawharu's father was Ngaere.
  • As children, Kawharu and Te Wehi have a falling out.
  • Kawharu leaves to join his tribe, the Ngāti Tamainupo, in battles against the Ngāti Raukawa.
  • Eventually, Kawharu reunites with Te Wehi and Pakaue.
  • Pakaue obtains a sacred cloak and war club from Te Rau, a chief of another tribe.
  • Tuahu-māhina attempts to obtain the sacred cloak and war club from Te Rau, but finds that Pakaue beat him to it.
  • Tuahu-māhina is mocked by Te Kanawa, chief of the Maniapoto, for his failure..
  • Tuahu-māhina and Te Kanawa unite. The Ngāti Ariari and the Maniapoto hunt for Pakaue.
  • Tuahu-māhina's son, Tautini-moko, kills Pakaue to obtain the sacred cloak and war club.
  • Te Wehi has an uncle, Toa-Rangatira, of the Ngāti Mango.
  • Kawharu and Te Wehi enlist Toa-Rangatira (and the entire Ngāti Mango tribe?) for aid against the Ngāti Ariari and the Maniapoto.
  • In 1675, war occurs. Ngāti Mango versus Ngāti Ariari and the Maniapoto. Tūahu-māhina dies, and his tribe, the Ngāti Ariari, are vanquished.
  • The Ngāti Ariari's territory, Kawhia, is turned over to the new Te Wehi tribe.
  • Te Kanawa and his chiefdom, the Maniapoto, survive.
