Copyvio

[edit]

I've proposed a rewrite here. Comments welcome. -- Robocoder (t|c) 22:38, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well done. :) Rewrite sans copyvio placed. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:30, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One missing factoid

[edit]

I think one thing that should be added (if known) is why the main character is apparently named after Chinese broccoli. And if that is indeed the case, when we could expect a Diego-like spinoff who will be named Bok choy. Ham Pastrami (talk) 18:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The flaw in your logic is that Chinese dialect used in the show is Mandarin (not Cantonese); thus, jie lan would be the Romanization of 芥蘭 as pronounced in Mandarin. -- Robocoder (t|c) 06:33, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
...Which fails to explain why Kai Lan's surname is romanised in Cantonese pronounciation... But anyway, this is ultimately not a big deal. It's a kid's show. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 07:06, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps some marketing droid's decision that Chow was preferable to Zhou or Chou. -- Robocoder (t|c) 21:40, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In any case, I wonder if it confuses the kids that most of the animals can't pronounce Kai-Lan's name properly? She isn't a Local Area Network e_e —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.73.70.113 (talk) 23:15, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

why did someone remove the external links? does anyone have a good justification for this? i will put them back in if someone cannot justify why LESS information should be made available. Daiv (talk) 17:43, 2 April 2008 (CST)

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't think the review is an appropriate source, but there is a Teri Weiss interview (a NickJr SVP) about the show that has some interesting content. -- Robocoder (t|c) 13:59, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Theme song

[edit]

Before anyone adds in anything about the theme song, I want some sources, that those Disney stars actually sang the song. Mokoniki | talk 13:42, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also like some sources for that soundtrack, because I can't find one. Mokoniki | talk 13:59, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bias

[edit]

Okay, i know this is very biased, so i am putting it here not the article. But the show actually gets words wrong. I am in Chinese Two, and have learned green to be "lü" pronounced exactly like its german counterpart, the show says it is "lu" like Waterloo.

And yes, i know it is a kid show, and they cant pronounce it, but many sites put IPA /y/ as closer to bee than boo...

And the show is nothing but secret Chinese propoganda to brainwash American youth into accepting our future Chinese Overlords —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.114.170.160 (talk) 06:37, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kind of like how all sorts of Disney and Hollywood crap is American propaganda trying to brainwash youths in other countries to accept American hegemony right? Or how Dora the Explorer is about promoting illegal immigration from Mexico I suppose? (rollseyes).
They should handle ü properly.
That sound is not totally alien to English. It's like the Scottish pronunciation of "good book", "guid buik".
Varlaam (talk) 22:06, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cease your mindless chatter. There is nothing of the sort and I will not succumb to your squawking.

There is no bias here. Edvine2 (talk) 12:52, 6 February 2012 (UTC) To me it seems like it was written by the show's producers Ex. (Ye Ye Details, Bias is in bold Ye Ye[reply]

Ye Ye (Mandarin word for "paternal grandfather") is Kai-lan's grandfather and legal guardian. He was born in Hong Kong and lovingly passes on his exciting traditions to his granddaughter. He provides Kai-lan with gentle guidance, leading her to find her own answers, at her own pace. (Kai-lan's parents and other grandparents are not known.) He can play the tuba. He also enjoys picking apples and making dumplings for Kai-lan and all her animal friends. He's known to pop out of places unexpectedly, but the gang just gets used to it after awhile. Next Is Kai-Lan Kai-Lan is the main character of a 7-year-old playful, adventurous second grader with a big heart. She speaks both English and Mandarin Chinese, and she is eager to share her language, her culture, and her playtime with her animal friends and the viewers at home. Kai-Lan is a natural leader but she is also thoughtful and caring with a gift for helping her friends when they really need her. Her favorite animal is a dinosaur and in her music group, she plays her tambourine. In the (aptly titled) episode Kai-Lan's Big Surprise, she tries to put together a big surprise party for Ye Ye, but all the decorations, the pineapple cake, and even her card fall victim to gusty winds. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Radioactiveplayful (talkcontribs) 14:59, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Her last name should be Chow as opposed to Chou on the wikipedia page. it has stated on the chinese wikipedia article of 你好凱蘭 that her last name in english spelled is Chow. I am aware that it is the same last name but still.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SberryShortcake (talkcontribs) 11:48, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Controversial topics

[edit]

In general me (and my kids) like the show. However, last week I saw one episode in which they told kids that if someone made something nice, it was OK to copy it. I saw this as a direct reference to the Chinese way of totally ignoring international copyright laws and copying just about any product. I don't want my kids to be indoctrinated like that. Does the series feature more of these, in my eyes, controversial topics? Stingray (talk) 08:37, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This has got to be the most idiotic thing I have read. I don't know which episode is being referred to but talking about copyright violations regarding kids copying another kid's arts and crafts work in a kid's show is just being silly. Also the show is produced by a (Chinese) American in the U.S. and not from China.

He's talking about the Everybody's Hat parade episode. Also, you can't copy EVERYTHING. Hats, yes. Outfits, yes. Most other things? No. Sometimes it's ILLEGAL to copy things... like movies. That would be called piracy and you will get in big trouble. So it's not controversial at all really. The outfits thing? Another example. Anyway... Don't judge anything by what you perceive. It could actually be untrue. Edvine2 (talk) 22:07, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mardarian?

[edit]

It says Kai-Lan is voiced by Falin Noei, a "Mardarian." What's a Mardarian? I cannot find anything about Mardarians on Wikipedia, and Google assumes I misspelled Mandarin. Is this just a typo? (BTW, I couldn't find Falin Noei from a Google search either) Wrongusername (talk) 21:37, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of Ni Hao

[edit]

Before I visited China, I learned that "ni hao?" means "How are you?", literally "You good?"
Perhaps it can function as a greeting ("Hi"), but is that its meaning? Varlaam (talk) 22:02, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese words, when taken literally, are not correct. General meaning is more important, so Ni Hao is really basically hi. Otherwise Fang Pi (Fart) would mean "give bad odors". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.160.149.139 (talk) 03:09, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I laughed, although I don't think THAT word will be used. Edvine2 (talk) 12:55, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My Childhood

It got taken off the Air on Nick Jr., and Only Treehouse TV is still showing this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snuggleblanket (talkcontribs) 11:46, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I wish Nick Jr was showing this again, similar to Team Umizoomi re-airing on Nick Jr on June 17, 2024… 2603:7000:6E3B:9266:30E2:8E6E:4AA:6F04 (talk) 00:28, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Anime influenced animation on the show

[edit]

According to the NY Times, Karen Chau collected bootleg tapes of Japanese anime dubbed in Chinese. She also was mad (very enthusiastic) for Hello Kitty, whose graphic style has rubbed off on the “Ni Hao” characters.
