New Article
[edit]A lot of material about the Niantic is available, and its story is quite fascinating. Will return to develop this stub.
Roughed-out the article. Needs references, pictures, and various other improvements. Need to check some details for accuracy.
Good start on an interesting article. I have added it to a couple relevant WikiProjects. A few suggestions:
- The lead paragraph is kind of confusing. Try to make it a more concise summary of the ship.
- Then, because the summary paragraph will have briefly explained the context, it would make more sense for the rest of the article to be in chronological order (Background before Rediscovery).
- Please italicize a ship's name every time you use it - Niantic is proper.
- This is very minor, especially because Niantic was both a ship and a hotel, but we still refer to a ship as 'her' rather than 'it'.
- The category Category:Merchant ships of the United States would be more appropriate than the generic category Category:Ships.
Let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to reading the completed article! Maralia 05:38, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the good advice, Maralia. Am now working on incorporating your comments, including a major reorganization that will probably take several revisions. Have added section stub tags until the sections are fleshed out. I hope to gather enough details of the ship to use one of the ship infoboxes referenced on your user page. I think owner names are available. Planning to add pictures later.

- If you do manage an infobox, it might be the first time in recorded history that somebody actually used the suggested infobox (or any infobox) for a civilian ship ;) Maralia 03:59, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I applied the infobox before I saw your note. Let me know if it should not be used for civilian ships. If it stays, I hope to compile and add to it a few more basic statistics that I know are out there. Thanks for your feedback. Taquito1 01:09, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Image
[edit]Thanks, Maralia! You are quick. It took me a whole evening to figure out how to get that image into Wikimedia, and then into the article.Taquito1 (talk) 03:57, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- I just happened to see your edit on my watchlist shortly after you added the image. Hard to believe it's been a year and a half since you first started the article :) Maralia (talk) 04:04, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Article Ratings
[edit]I changed the WikiProject Ships article rating from Start Class to B-Class, based on the quality scale and B-Class checklist at {{WikiProject Ships}}. I am not a member of the Ships WikiProject, and will defer to consensus within the project if it comes to that. Taquito1 (talk) 02:15, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
I changed the WikiProject San Francisco Bay Area article rating from Start Class to B-Class, based on the quality scale at {{SFBAProject}}. I also changed the importance to MID; that was a difficult judgment to make (LOW vs MID), and will defer to others if there is disagreement. The ship may be long gone, marked only by a plaque, but I think it had an iconic place in the city's early history. Note that "iconic buildings" are assessed as HIGH importance, which is clearly overstating it for Niantic. I am not a member of the SFBA WikiProject, and will defer to consensus within the project if it comes to that. Taquito1 (talk) 02:53, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
No hard feelings if someone sees fit to reduce my assessments above. I think Start Class is definitely too low, so it is either B or C. SFBA importance may be arguable. Taquito1 (talk) 02:53, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
