Merge with Nigerian Police Force[edit]

Merger tag placed by without reason. Kintetsubuffalo 14:40, 30 July 2009

Disagree - organization is important enough and the article is large enough to warrant separation. Precedence as set in the French Gendarmerie article and all its spin offs.--Degen Earthfast (talk) 17:07, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree as stated above AloniRaShaShante

Update requested[edit]

This article describes the legal authority of the department as originating in the 1979 constitution, and the “organization” section seems to be about the department’s history. Please update with information based on the 1999 constitution. 50.246.99.246 (talk) 17:44, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sections and general article upgrade[edit]

  • Sections need to be reordered and in some parts tabulated! I have started with Departments. As it stands, the article does not clearly describe a complex organization of this sort (law enforcement) especially about Nigeria. The Information is more or less factual but poorly cited, lacks logical presentation of those facts and needs to be expanded. Please contribute or message me on how to collaborate on this article.
  • There was virtually no introduction to this article. The importance of this article in the context of contemporary Nigeria cannot be over-stressed, a comprehensive and easily readable summary is a basic. Please expand and link, Thanks

First colonial police[edit]

The article currently lists the establishment of police in Nigeria at 1820. This information was introduced in January 2016 (or reintroduced, on the possibility that it was mentioned before but removed). The source cited appeared after that date, and I'm having trouble finding any source that supports this claim that was published before it appeared on Wikipedia. (It's worth noting that London's police force was established in 1829.)

As an example of the apparent paucity of sources corroborating this, this paper notes that "NPF emerged from the various pockets of police units established by the colonial government in Imo State (in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria) in 1820, Kano (in the North) in 1879 and Lagos (in the West) in 1896.". The citation at the end of the sentence reads: "8 – <https://www.npf.gov.ng/zone9.php> on 14 April 2016." Not only is this several months after the date first appeared on Wikipedia, but archives of the page just before and just after that date don't appear to include this date of 1820. I've only located sources that put the establishment of predecessor organizations to the current Nigeria Police Force in the 2nd half of the 19th century, particularly the 1860s and 1870s, though there are more I'd like to review.

Can anyone else find support for the 1820 start date in anything published before it appeared on Wikipedia? DoSazunielle (talk) 18:50, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
