Word

It's just the word nig'ger spelt differently. At some point the alternative spelling must have came into common usage in America, but the article doesn't say anything about that.

(the filter wouldn't accept nig'ger, so had to use an apostrophe) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7D:8AA3:C300:5BD:EB45:1178:1FD4 (talk) 22:58, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

The word (ultimately) derives from the Latin word for "black", which is 'niger' (and pronounced like 'nigger' in classical Latin)

This is not the only source, but is factual (information below) This information dates back further to the meaning as well as the river in Africa. Please update.

https://kamalaladil.com/2012/12/22/negus-n-negaste-niggers-nigga/ Like you is a nigga nigga nigger ecember 22, 2012 by KAA 24 Comments NEGUS (n). Negaste. Niggers. Nigga. A unique derivative of an ancient title. NEGUS (n). is “King” a term originated from Abyssinia. A king- used as a title of the sovereign of Ethiopia. This term is originated by its native Ethiopian Amharic language. Since the creation of the title NEGUS (n) has been used to identify but defined differently to physiologically change the minds of captive Africans to re think of themselves as someone less than whom they were. Many western names like Negus originate from religious texts like the Bible, the Bhagavadgītā, the Quran, and so on. Often these names relate to a religious expression such as “Worthy of praise”. Many western names like Negus originate from religious texts like the Bible, the Bhagavadgītā, the Quran, and so on. Often these names relate to a religious expression such as “Worthy of praise”. NEGUS NAGASTE (King of Kings) Prayer A prayer of the Negus Negaste (i.e. King of Kings): “May the Lord of Heaven make strong my kingdom! And as he has this day conquered for me my enemy may he conquer for me wheresoever I go … (I will rule) the people with righteousness and justice, and will not oppress them.” I praise Allah, except whom there is none to be worshipped, who is the Ruler of the world. He is innocent and pure free from all blemishes, defects, flaws, or shortcomings). He gives refuge and sustains all. I do admit that Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him) son of Mariam (Mary), was the soul from Allah and His word (Order), he was infused to Mariam, who was clean and proof against evil. KEBRA NAGASTE, or the Book of the Glory of Kings of Ethiopia, has been in existence for at least a thousand years, and contains the true history of the origin of the Solomonic line of kings in Ethiopia. It is regarded as the ultimate authority on the history of the conversion of the Ethiopians from the worship of the sun, moon, and stars to that of the Lord God of Israel.

“Nigger” “Nigga” a term form after slavery for the African American by the New World original colonialists

Where the title Nigger given to the enslaved through the African Diaspora mainly of Kings and Queens… and the tribes associated with royal ownership and prestige? Also did African Americans conveniently intelligently re word the title “nigger” to “nigga” to give it a less provoking sense of meaning for encouragement. Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished was created by the late TuPac Shakur to stimulate a change in meaning from the “nigger” original re created term and title. I do not approve of re defining any ignorant word. The practical sense of Slavery The use of Slavery was acts of capture, seize, and control. Typically when an army goes out to take capture of someone they capture the person in charge to control the social society of a particular land and system. When a person captures someone they typically want to capture the persons in charge of King or Queen so it can show the rest of the village that they sense of power and leadership is gone and now your left to fend for yourself. The thought provoking sense and duty behind slavery is to control. Does that mean capturing the King and Queens of the land or Chiefs and placing them into captivity so their tribal association can fall victim to poverty and non sufficient leadership. Without the presence of a dominant figure to administer the tribes and land to structure, that means people will fall victim to outside control and ruler ship. Nigger is now discretely said and used in reference to describe any and all persons of African decent, regardless of social status, income or religion. It is also used to define an act of ignorance. As time manifest from the ancient origin the word has been re worded and translated in a derogatory and inappropriate use against Africans chosen through the Diaspora of the slave trade.

Mexican-Americans

I have removed the following lines:

This is reflected in the term's wide use in modern American gang culture. According to a Texas Monthly article about Houston gangs, many Hispanic street gang members call each other niggah.[1]

Obviously African-American/hip-hop culture influences modern U.S. gang culture but I don’t think that undue weight should be placed on gang members’ use of the term, any more so than other young inner-city inhabitants.

I don’t know exactly what would be the best reliable source for this but, apocryphally, googling `mexicans nigga' returns many results of discussions—some disapproving, some shruggingly accepting—of young Chicanos/Mexican-Americans from the ’hood who say nigga. Gangsters are by no means the only ones into whose speech this word has found its way.

Here’s a Village Voice article which seems legit enough, although that’s a New York perspective which, in my mind, Caribbean Hispanics of African descent saying it is a different than Mexicans in Chicago/Texas/L.A. Anyway, please feel free to restore a reliably sourced passage about Latinos’/Mexican-Americans’ use.

Furthermore, I don’t think the passage really flowed well there in terms of natural transition from a discussion of ODB’s “N★★★a Please” to Hispanic gang members. —Wiki Wikardo 20:35, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Should Redirect to "Nigger"

The problem with this page is that there's nothing that establishes that "nigga" is a seperate word from "Nigger". Notably, no bona-fide dictionary lists "Nigga" as its own individual entry. Therefore, this page should simply redirect to "Nigger" and the information presented on this page should be included as a section on that page. 108.201.29.108 (talk) 18:38, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

It doesn't matter whether it's listed in any dictionary or not. One need only spend some time among people (both black and white) who are into hip hop culture to see that nigga is waaaay different than the N-word. White people in hip hop cultures use it just as often, and I have personally witnessed and there are videos on YouTube as well, of black people telling white or other race people that it's ok to call them "nigga." Because they're "boys."
For the longest time pop culture references and other slang terms were not in any dictionaries, and in my opinion should not be in dictionaries (unless it's a slang dictionary).
However, I will say subjectively I agree with you. I think if people have a problem with anyone using "nigga" it should either be able to be used by anyone who wishes to use it, or no one at all. In fact some black people do consider it to be offensive even when used by other blacks. You can see in the episode of "The Boys" where Mother's Milk is first introduced he's talking to some black kids who refer to someone as their "niggas" and his response is disgust "Excuse me???" as if he just sweared in front of him. But this page covers this aspect of it I believe. 76.198.55.252 (talk) 14:43, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Asian American Usage

The term "rice nigga" is also used more today in the West Coast Area. While it also has history of being used before as a derogatory term, it's re-appropriated in the modern day with good intentions.[1][2]

The English-Russian language translation of word "nigga"

"Nigga" would sound and carry the same meaning as in "My nigga!" "Мой нигга!" (Moi nigga !). Nigger is considered to be a racial slur among both languages. "Negr" or Russian "Негр" means negroid, a person belonging to the negroid race.

Merge to nigger

Is the word nigga really different enough from nigger that it needs a separate article? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:03, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

They are different words 2604:2000:1107:A0DA:D5C1:6EF0:4314:EC60 (talk) 22:45, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
No, they are not. "Haven't" and "have not" are not different words. They are different renderings of the same words. 'Eejit' is a regional variation (parts of the USA and Northern Ireland) in pronunciation of the word 'idiot'. They are not different words. L'il, lil, li'l and lil' is just a phonetic spelling of the word 'little'. They are not different words. Ratchet is just a mispronunciation (and subsequent mis-spelling) of the word 'wretched'. Fella is not a different word than 'fellow'. It's just a commonly-accepted phonetic spelling of the same word. Same with many words, like holla/holler and even a word like troll, which is a mis-spelling of the word 'trawl'. Although the last one has actually started to depart from the original meaning.
Anyway, I support this proposal to merge the articles. --82.21.97.70 (talk) 14:36, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose merger. Whether they are different words or not, they are different concepts. We give people with the same name different articles because they are not the same thing. There are other examples of articles on Wikipedia with similar names but different articles. See disam. page Tantric for examples. Since the terms are used in radically different ways they need different articles. Dakinijones (talk) 02:06, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Merge with the other article

This is just a phonetic spelling of the other word. I recommend merging it with the main article on the word. While I agree that some view "nigga" and its more offensive root word as just one and the same, the article goes in depth about how African-Americans reclaimed it despite the deep-seated stigma it still inherited from the word they co-opted from those who use it in a racist way. Blake Gripling (talk) 02:31, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

The word Murzyn has nothing to do with the word Nigga

The Polish word "Murzyn" mentioned in the article literally means "a black man" in Polish and has nothing to do with the word "nigga" or any other derogatory slurs. Therefore it should not be listed here. It can be at most seen as an equivallent of the word "Negro" but still, with a neutral socio-cultural and historical background, unlike "Negro". The main controversy about the word "Murzyn" in recent years is connected with the fact that some groups associate this word with someone who works hard for little money, or for no money at all. But this is a modern and more slang use of the term as 95% of the society don't even think about this alternative meaning. The Polish equivallent of the word "Nigga" is "Czarnuch" if you want to know. So please do not suggest, that Polish people calling a black man "Murzyn" try to insult him. This is just the Polish word for a black person, on a quite similar basis as Mexicans calling all white English-speaking people with the term "Gringo". That is why I deleted the word from the See Also section of the article: [1]. Listing this word in the article about the word "Nigga" is highly suggestive and unencyclopedic.
