Spelling of Name[edit]

Ali's new book is under the name Nimko rather than Nimco … I did check to confirm it is the same person. (e.g. see Nimco's Twitter account)

Which university did she attend?[edit]

Her university in ‘almamater’ is the University of Bristol, whereas in her ‘personal life’ section it says the University of West England, Bristol. These are two different universities. Which one is it? Do we have evidence? Edwardaves (talk) 17:37, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think I've just spent almost an hour trying to find a reliable reference to where she may/or may not have been to university. (As I write, the article says UWE.) The existing reference in "Early Life" states UWE, but the actually source says Bristol Universirty.[1] But I can't find anything to support Bristol reliably (BBC is reliable, but the source is actually radio which there's no audio file). She even spoke at an event at Bristol in 2017, but her bio didn't mention being alumni, which seems a bit likely if she had attended that university.[2] I can't find anything that supports UWE. In general, I've tried just about every permutation of search critieria to find something, anything that might be reliable (rather than the inevitable round-and-round Wikipedia based pseudo news sites). But I think the one page that really makes me wonder is her invitation to be a Visiting Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge in 2021.[3] She was one of 16 fellows announced for 2021, but I noticed that in almost all the mini-bios the other Fellows invariably state their respective undergraduate and/or gradute institutions. This seems pretty apporpraite bio information for such a role at a university. But nothing is mentioned within Nimco Ali's mini-bio. This was a bit of strong indication that maybe she didn't actually go to university, or maybe dropped out. I don't know. I've got a feeling she probably did go to university, but feelings don't matter in Wikipedia. Therefore I'm going to remove any mention of university from her article leaving this very long and maybe unnecessarily detailed insight into my research.Seaweed (talk) 21:31, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My other recommendation for the infobox would be to change the Occupation from "Social activist, author." to {{hlist|Social activist|author}}.
Uncapitalize the "The" in the "...and The book contained 42 stories...".
The lede should be re-written to:

Ali underwent female genital mutilation in Djibouti, and later went on to form the Daughters of Eve organization with Leyla Hussein to campaign against FGM. She released her first book in 2019 that contains 42 stories from 152 interviews that Ali collected from women across 14 countries. Later that year she co-founded The Five Foundation with Brendan Wynne, and in 2020 she co-founded the Ginsburg Women's Health Board with Mika Simmons.

She contested a seat in the 2017 general election under the Women's Equality Party. In 2019, she supported Boris Johnson, endorsed the Conservative Party and campaigned for Conservative candidates. She was appointed as Independent Government Adviser for Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls in 2020.

In the "Isobel Shirlaw said in i that it was an important book and that "The chorus of women's voices which provide a multi-dimensional, global view of these hidden issues is powerful."" sentence, the last quotation mark should be moved on the left side of the comma.

All are alright, although the Twitter source should be replaced by a different reliable source. I've also found that she campaigns/campaigned for Conservatives, this should get added IMO.

Friend and godparent[edit]

That Ali is a friend / close friend / even "best friend" of Carrie Johnson and godmother to her son is supported by a reliable third-party source citation (Telegraph) and a quick search finds other RSs (inc. I, The Independent, ITV, The Times, The Guardian). The friend and godmother was included at the time of the Good Article review in January (when the citation was Tatler).

Against this is an unsourced assertion.

It is not an unsourced assertion. It is the subject's own words in a TV interview, when questioned about her friendship with the Johnson's she replied that one should not believe everything one reads in the papers. Just because we list something as a RS, that does not mean everything in it is true, and in this instance we have the subject of the article herself explicitly describing it as unreliable. NA is the only reliable source on who NA considers as her friends, and Wikipedia should not be propagating worthless gossip. Kevin McE (talk) 12:48, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
