Suggestion about advertisements
Given that this is an article about the magazine itself, information about the types of advertisements, prominent advertisers, and number of pages of advertising in proportion to number of pages of content would be interesting additions to this article. --205.251.151.250 02:06, 13 June 2006 (UTC) (account: Stumpokapow, not signed in))
This article needs work.
I'm not sure about the veracity of the section regarding Player's Guides (I'm pretty sure the first Player's Guide came out before Nintendo Power). I'll look into it.
I noticed when you stack up the issues in chronological order (earliest on bottom, facing up), pictures appear. problem is, i don't have all issues. I would like to know what it looks like in full. pictures are nice ^_^
- To answer your question, the pictures are:
- Volumes 92-103 (1997): Mario
- Volumes 104-115 (1998): Link as seen in Ocarina of Time
- Volumes 116-127 (1999): Donkey Kong
- Volumes 128-139 (2000): Lugia
- Volumes 152-154 (Jan.-Mar. 2002): Fox McCloud
- Volumes 156-159 (May-Aug. 2002): Mario with FLUDD
- Volumes 161-163 (Oct.-Dec. 2002): Samus Aran
- Volumes 164-172 (2003): Link as seen in The Wind Waker
- Volumes 175-192 (2004-June 2005): who are you? - Nintendo Maximus
Milestones
I think that the milestones are way too trivial. Anyone have any comments? - A Link to the Past (talk) 13:26, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- I would agree with that statement. That whole section is unencyclopedic. --Crossman33 22:09, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- I also agree with that statement. I strongly believe it should be deleted or many of the "milestones" need to be removed. Psychless 22:12, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Removed Milestones Section
I decided that the Milestones section was very trivial and did not seem relevant enough to the article. Please discuss the change below and feel free to revert the change if I was to bold. Psychless 22:36, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Controversy section
The entire controversy section lacks proper citations, leaving one to assume it was based on on original research. Given its libelous nature, the claims should be verified and properly cited, or removed altogether. The section was not far away from meriting a POV notice either; it violates Wikipedia's objectivity guidelines by broadly stating, it is inherently biased, and then dubbing the magazine "Nintendo Propaganda" (a nickname which needs an additional citation). Strangley, the article seems to go in-depth about the Nintendo-Sega relationship, but fails to properly adress any bias in reviews, previews, or columns. Finally, the bits about the controversial Castlevania and Resident Evil covers, also need citations - I've heard and even read about columnists talking about the Castlevania cover, but I have yet to hear, read, or see anything negative about the Resident Evil one. I'll snip through Topix and Google News for anything that might help. For further help, please see the Wiki-links above. --ShadowJester07 ► Talk 12:27, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Fact tags
The CVII and CBFD stuff is definitely true (I had an issue or two that mentioned complaints about the CVII cover). On the other hand, I've never heard of the "Nintendo Propaganda" thing. Wtfurahaxor 10:15, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Nintendofanclubcover.jpg
Image:Nintendofanclubcover.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

- Fair. I personally do not deem it an un-fair picture. It is of very low resolution and is no longer produced.

20 Years of Nintendo Power
This is technically a new section, though only for 2008. Shouldn't it be right there, with the rest of them? If not, meh, I'll change it back. What the best way to do this would be, I don't know. Perhaps a "Temporary" title for this section, inside of "Currently Running"? Whatever the case, I'm adding it, it should be there. (ApostleJoe (talk) 18:26, 3 January 2008 (UTC))
Controversy
"Nintendo Power has received controversy concerning Conker's Bad Fur Day,[citation needed] a Nintendo 64 video game developed by then-second party developer Rare. The game was very controversial, containing sex, alcohol, obscene language, and drugs. Nintendo Power did not even mention the game upon its release, causing mild controversy about the family image that Nintendo was trying to preserve.[citation needed]"
I can't figure out for the life of me what this is trying to say. They didn't cover the game, yet the got flack for it? Seeing as no sources are cited, I'm removing it. Captain America 20:50, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- Cap, I could swear I saw you get shot in your comic book the other day...
- Anyway, don't remove it, it's part of Nintendo Power's history. I'll try to find some sources. (ApJ (talk) 22:50, 8 February 2008 (UTC))
- This mayb be a bit late and a little OT I believe what was trying to be said here is that Nintendo Power was being accusd of censorship because they refused to cover games because they did not agree with the content. --207.236.151.102 (talk) 14:32, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
NES focus?
In the beginning, it was mostly about NES. What issue or year did the magazine shift from being primarily NES-focused to SNES-focused? i.e. what were the NES years? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sonjaaa (talk • contribs) 04:55, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Go over to the Retromags Wiki and they list out what games were covered in each issue, that will give you an idea of when each system started and ceased having games being reviewed —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.55.45.19 (talk) 16:51, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Need help finding a poster
Does anyone remember which issue had the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time poster? It was bigger than the usual two fold poster, and the back was gold.209.91.61.251 23:11, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
This isn't really the place to look for it. There are forums and stuff. This is where we talk about improving the article. Joiz A. Shmo 02:06, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Like the Nintendo forums? You have got to be joking. As close as it is, it's very useless. It would be good, however, if there was a list of each issue and the contents inside on Wikipedia.209.91.61.251 09:37, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- That's not really notable enough to be in. And the Wikipedia community tends to frown on really long lists that appeal only to some people. Joiz A. Shmo 14:17, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Perfect 10

You apparently haven't been reading Nintendo Power for very long, because I remember at least 2 other games (Super Smash Bros. Melee and The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker) to receive perfect scores. ~ Hyuugamoto (talk) 03:22, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Future US Subscription
Has anyone else had trouble getting their subscription after they changed? I personally have had to fill out their online resubscription form twice, and although it was billed a month ago, I still haven't got it. Some of my friends have been having this problem too, and I thought that if anyone else is having these issues we might add it to the controversy/criticism section. JDub90 (talk) 15:19, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
- Unless you have a source you can't add that. Me5000 (talk) 20:53, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
- I know, but I didn't know if this was something common, and if it turned out it was I would try to find a source. JDub90 (talk) 15:15, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
I think it should have some mention in the article. For the past 3 months I have had to E-Mail "Future Publishing" and remind them to send me my magizine. I shouldn't have to constently contact them to get something I have already paid for. Several of my friends as well are also having this problem. I see no reason why it can't have a short mention in the controversy/criticism section. Zabbethx (talk) 20:33, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Merch. Catalogs
Why is there no mention of these. I remember i would recieve these quarterly with my subscription, and they contained items such as Player's Guides, Soundtracks, Plushies, T-shirts, and lots of other cool stuff. You could even earn coupons through the magazine by sending entries to various high score challenges featured in every issue. I Still have some of the stuff i ordered through those catalogs. Surely there must be someone else who remembers this. The Great Morgil (talk) 20:39, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- I've only been a subscriber for a few years now, so I have never personally come across any of these catalogs. However I do remember reading hearing about them. If any citeable info can be found (and I will look myself later on tonight) then it should definitely be mentioned. -Zomic13 (talk) 20:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hello, I am a subscriber since Jet Force Gemini came out [as that was my first magazine; Fall 1999]. I still have a copy of one of these catalogues stashed away somewhere in a box. I can confirm that these used to exist around when Nintendo 64 was in its prime [I would say 1999. However, of course, we need to have a "source" in order to actually insert the section to the article. A couple of the items that were available upon order included the plushies [Mario, Yoshi, DK, Peach] which a friend of mine actually ordered all of them. I also have a T-Shirt when I resubscribed to Nintendo Power of an all black t-shirt with the trademark Legend of Zelda 2-rowed heart scheme over the breast of the shirt. If you would like, I can find both the catalogue and the t-shirt [along with any Players Guides and post them up here. troyoda1990 (talk) 23:39, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Nintendo Power Freebies
I noticed there was a section on VHS tapes sent out to Nintendo Power subscribers. I recall when I first bought a subscription to Nintendo Power (back around 1990) they gave a free game to new subscribers. The game was Dragon_Warrior, which I see mentioned in that article. Should it be mentioned here as well? It seems likely more relevant than free VHS tapes. 24.58.37.208 (talk) 17:58, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
Move back to "Nintendo Power"
That is the actual name, it is already mentioned at the beginning of the article that it is the American magazine. Please move it. PorkyPokey (talk) 00:12, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Adding a promotions section to the article
I think it would be really cool if we could add a section to this about free products that were sent with the magazine to subscribers.(not products given to new subscribers) Like I remember getting to videos, one previewing the launch of the N64, and one prebiewing banjo-kazooie, and I once got a pack of mario kart 64 trading cards. I'm sure there was other stuff, just having a list of all the packaged stuff would be cool. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.189.131.183 (talk) 03:31, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Criticism
Nintendo Power is often praised for its previews and other features, but one thing seems to get sharp criticism from many fans: the reviews. Many fans say that they often go too easy or too hard on games, or don't provide enough detail. Thoughts? --Gaming King 09:00, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- Go too easy. Absolutely bias in most of their issues or should I say games. Usually when it comes to games from Nintendo or from a second party developer, the review ratings are usually high and never mention about the flaws or disadvantage the game may have. In comparision to Official Playstation Magazine and Official XBox Magazine, Nintendo Power gives out more high rating reviews per an issue than the OPM and OXBM combined together. Not very true but gives you a rough example. What's also different is being in-housed with the actual company, Nintendo. Unlike OXBM and OPM which is under a magazine publishing company instead being part of the actual console company. This might have something to do with the positive reviews. It could be the reviewers trying to keep their jobs by saying "yes" to everything, being told to do something that's not true to their minds, or simply want to avoid the angry letters from big second-party game developers when the magazine is suppose to market the game. HighEnergyProtons 04:21, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- You make a good point, but they don't always love Nintendo or second-party games. Gheist, published by Nintendo got only a 5.0. They hit it in the face with a stick! :P They do usually mention a flaw, or two, or several in Nintendo and second-party games. Look at Metroid Prime Hunters. They gave it an 8.5, with a second oppinion of 8.0, citing the lame Adventure mode. What baffles me is that they gave DK King of Swing, a game that I personally thought was absolutely horrible, an 8.0. (Apparently, though, a lot of other reviewers liked it, though not often as much as NP.) The one thing that makes me absolutely FURIOUS is that they let Steve, a HUGE Sonic fanboy who thought Sonic Heroes, a game massively hated by fans, should've won the Best Game Power Award the year of its release, review EVERY SINGLE SONIC GAME! He gave Shadow the Hedgehog, widely considered the series' demise, AN 8.0!!! So, anyone else think we oughta add a criticism section? --Gaming King 07:05, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
The only criticism I have (besides the sometimes-biased reviews) are how blurry the screenshots are. They need either a better camera, or a better screenshot source. Also, they need somebody else to review the Sonic the Hedgehog games. If not, then Steve needs a replacement. Some of the reviewers that coat their reviews with sugar may need to go as well. Link 486 6:29 PM, August 27, 2006.
Latest example of overblown goodness: Star Fox Command. They gave it 9.5, which I think is too high. Not that Command is bad; I actually love it, but it has obvious flaws. On the flip side, they owned many bad games, including the Nintendo-published Tenchu: Dark Secret. Well, anyway, I think I'll add a criticism section. Tell me what you think.--Gaming King 03:06, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- What you think isn't the same as what the Nintendo Power staff thinks. If the staff felt that the game is worth a 9.5, then it's their right to print a review with that score, but they're not forcing anyone to agree with it. Maybe they just didn't see the "obvious" flaws in Star Fox Command that you apparently did.
- I know it's easy to point at the obvious possibilities of bias, but because they aren't consistant in that bias (like you just said, Star Fox Command got a great score while Tenchu DS scored poorly), it's not worth getting hung up over, nor is it really worth noting in a criticism section when other review sources could just as easily be accused of bias in favor of Sony or Microsoft-published games.--Hailinel 03:12, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- I seem to recall that when the N64 was in planning and was going up against CD-ROM based systems, there was an "editorial" about how cartridge-based systems were far superior to CD-based ones because of the load times. It gave very short shrift to the huge price and capacity advantages of CDs and did not mention other motivations (such as anti-piracy) for sticking with cartridges. Anyone else remember this or have that issue on hand? --Dgies 08:09, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- I really wish that the controversy section would have kept the info about how biased Nintendo Power is/was. Deleting it all because It wasn't properly sourced doesn't seem right. I was huge fan of Nintendo and a magazine subscriber from 1993 to 1999. Looking back I remember how they devoted pages and pages to their "amazing" first party games, and everything else was touted along the lines of "not that bad" and kind of seemed to fall through the cracks. Their top 10/20 lists were full of in-house games, and they criticized their competition for everything they could. I remember both the magazine and the letters section talked about how cluttered the other magazines were since they allowed adds, and of course Nintendo Power didn't -- at least until they started running adds too. Even the letters they chose were overly pro-nintendo -- cheesy stuff like "my friend tried to tell me sega was better, but I set him straight. Sega doesn't hold a candle to the power of the SNES". I'm not sure how the magazine has developed in the past 5 years or so, but I think at least some of this needs to be put into the article. I'm still a big nintendo fan, but the magazine was widely known for being Nintendo propaganda. If I can find some of the old magazines I'll put some scans up. They read more like a brochure than a magazine. Cannedbeef 07:09, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
I remember reading the magazine back in the day. I just couldn't understand why everything they reviewed was good, fair or great. It would take a huge disaster of a game for the reviewers to say anything bad about a game. Unfortunately it is impossible to get actual sources to back up these claims.Reinoe (talk) 02:33, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
