Neutrality of Article

[edit]

This article appears to have been written by someone at Nipissing University. It use "we" and "you" throughout the article and attempts to advertise the value of Nipissing university. I am making several edits right now to help aid this. I am also removing references to excellence, because I'm pretty sure Nipissing has to be one of the worst universities in Ontario (by academic ranking). Nlsanand 01:22, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with the biased statement re: "worst universities in Ontario". There are two controversial ranking surveys (Maclean's and the Globe & Mail), one of which places Nipissing at the top of its category and one that places it last. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.26.222.175 (talk) 21:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't matter how good it is either way. It's advertising obviously written by someone with an interest in its success. I should note that I also pulled the "lakes" section out as it had nothing to do with the university itself - they just happen to be in the same town. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SnOrfys (talkcontribs) 13:42, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Even if the Maclean's ranking were correct, all of the universities in the publicly funded Ontario university system are of high quality, and the difference between the "best" and the "worst" is negligible at best. There are some aspects of university life at Nipissing that are indeed "excellent" and would stand up well against any other university in the Province. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.57.148.250 (talk) 07:54, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought I'd point out that someone has added ``which is very corrupt`` to the end of ``The Student Union Council comprises mainly of two parts: the executive council and the student representatives.`` While from personal experience this may be true it has no place in an encyclopedia entry. I`m going to revert this article to its previous version. Rabbitstorm (talk) 23:19, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Neal Patrick Harris Learning Library

[edit]

I removed this section from the article, because it didn't cite any sources and when I visited the NU website, it made no reference to a Neal Patrick Harris Learning Library. Me-123567-Me (talk) 17:45, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The real story here is that the library is called "The Harris Library" in honour of Mike Harris, but naturally since he's still not quite what one could call the most popular former premier of the province there's a bit of a (not reliably sourceable and certainly not in any significant way notable) social media movement to rebrand it as being in honour of Neil Patrick Harris instead. Stupidity, yep, but that's the backstory. Bearcat (talk) 22:21, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Volunteer Organizations on Campus

[edit]

There needs to be a section on volunteer organizations at Nipissing. That is a significant part of the university community, and organizations like Nipissing University Student Ambassadors, The Learning Network, and the Gen1 project are all contributing components of university life. As a benefit to all students, these organizations add significant advantage ovr other universities- we are unique because of these great groups! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.197.167.140 (talk) 15:52, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done. (I left off the "Dr." since Wikipedia style is to omit it.) You all need to update this page on your own site, btw. Rivertorch (talk) 10:03, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There needs to be a place for residence on the Wikipedia page. There is no mention and therefore students will not know how amazing it is if they, or their parents, look at the page. Nipissinggal (talk) 14:13, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: You have made no edit request in the form "Please replace XXX with YYY" or "Please add ZZZ between PPP and QQQ", so it is unclear what you want added.
Furthermore, you have not cited any reliable sources to back up your request, without which no information can be added to this article.
Please also note we do not use peacock words, or puffery in Wikipedia articles. - Arjayay (talk) 18:44, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The page is laced with promotional advertisement and clearly written by someone with a vested interest in promoting the university. Words such as "highly respected", "Canada's foremost faculties", "superior", "prestigious" are not indicative of a unbiased article. It was mentioned previously that this page is quite biased, but no adjustments have been made to this page to improve it, instead the page has been locked. 192.198.202.194 (talk) 03:19, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, and have removed some of it, though several more paragraphs could do with a rewrite and some sources. Would it be too much to ask you to create an account and join in? Best, Sam Sailor Sing 06:23, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Change In addition to Nipissing University's main campus in North Bay, a facility shared with Canadore College, the university also has two satellite campuses in Southern Ontario.

Muskoka Campus In August 1996, Nipissing University opened a satellite campus in Bracebridge, the heart of Muskoka. The campus offers students the opportunity to study full-time or part-time towards three different Arts and Science degrees; Child and Family Studies, Culture and the Arts or a 3-year liberal arts degree. Students can also opt to do more course work in a specific discipline, positioning themselves for further studies towards an Honours degree which may be completed at the North Bay campus. Class sizes are small. The campus provides access to special support programs, including—Career Counselling, Job Search, Academic Skills Programs, Peer Tutoring resources and individualized assistance for special needs students. Muskoka Campus applicants are also eligible for Nipissing University entrance scholarships and bursaries. In September 2008, the new Nipissing University Muskoka Campus opened its new facility on Wellington St right beside the old Centennial Centre( now the new Georgian College Facility)

Partly done: OK, I've changed the chancellor to Paul Cook but I have not performed your other edit requests. I checked out the website and it seems that Muskoka Residence Complex is still a university residence and it still says on the website that the university has three campuses. I'm rejecting your other two edit requests on this occasion. You may re-open this edit request but provide sources to backup your edits. st170etalk 15:51, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Student Union

[edit]

Change

"The Student Union represents the students at Nipissing University. They are members of the Canadian Federation of Students. Along with the Canadore Students' Representative Council, the Student Union is the joint owner and operator of the student centre at Canadore College.[1][2]

Within the executive council, there are four elected positions: the President; the Vice-President External – whose responsibilities include representing the student body and its interests outside the university, as well as managing the student health plan; the vice-president internal – whose responsibilities include representing the student body and its interests within the University, managing the clubs and sitting on Senate in the university; and vice-president student life – whose responsibilities include organizing events on campus.[3]

The student representatives, known as the NUSU Delegates, are members of the student population who represent different areas of study, campuses, and residences at the university. There are a total of 14 delegates. They represent students from sciences, humanities, social sciences, professional schools, the Muskoka campus, residences, faculty of education, graduate studies and part-time and mature students.[4]"

to

"The Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) is the official body representing the student point of view at Nipissing. All students, both full-time and part-time, belong to the Student Union and fund the organization through their incidental fees. As part of its ongoing commitment to academic excellence and social growth, NUSU deals with many aspects of student life on campus, including the academic governance of the university and social events.

Nipissing University students are able to elect student executive representatives. These roles include: President, VP Governance & Legal Affairs, VP Finance, VP Communications, and VP Services.

The executives are also part of NUSU’s Board of Directors which include another 10 student positions. The Directors-at-Large are part of the highest decision-making body of NUSU and hold accountable the executives to their job while making decisions on behalf of the student population.

NUSU provides services such as the Student Food Bank, academic advocacy, social events, Frosh Week, Shinerama, Awareness Campaigns, clubs on campus, health and dental plan and much more. NUSU’s executives sit on Nipissing University’s Board of Governors and Academic Senate. Elections are held annually for executive positions (paid), NUSU Board of Director positions (volunteer) and Student Senator positions (volunteer). NUSU’s student membership belongs to the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS-Local 20)." Nuwebmaster (talk) 17:26, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: The text you proposed is written in an unnecessarily formal, and slightly advertorial manner. Rewriting that section in this tone would not be an improvement. DaßWölf 23:53, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
