Name[edit]

Its a confusing name as there are other North Island fault systems. Noted the term North Island Shear Belt in a recent PhD thesis (Taylor, Susanna K. A Long Timescale High-Resolution Fault Activity History of the Whakatane Graben, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand (PhD thesis Graduate School of the Southampton Oceanography Centre) (PDF) (Thesis). Retrieved 2023-04-04.) which seems better to me. Anyway will create a redirect and add alternative name to article ChaseKiwi (talk) 17:00, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's the name that the article started as and matched that sources that I used when I expanded it. Looking at changes with time, the North Island Fault System was used in research papers more than twice as often as the North Island Shear Belt in the last 13 years, so that option (NISB) is becoming less used. North Island Dextral Fault Belt was used slightly more often than the NIFS over that same period, but they are running neck and neck over the last three years, so no reason to change I reckon.
