"prostitute bird"

[edit]

I removed this text:

Because of their polygamous nature, locals often refer to the female as the prostitute bird.

The person who put the sentence in told me by e-mail that he heard this from tour guides in Costa Rica. If there's a source, it could go back in. —JerryFriedman 04:57, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parra cordifera

[edit]

Des Murs describes “Jacana Cordifère. Parra cordifera. Lesson, Rev. Zool. 1842 p. 135.” at https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/109479#page/209/mode/1up

(This Description, as well as our Drawing, are made on the very individual who served as a type for the Diagnosis of the honorable Mr. Lesson, to whom we owe the obliging Communication, and who paid tribute to the Museum of Natural History of Paris. This Bird comes from Acapulco, where it was discovered and brought back by Mr. Adolphe Lesson, Nephew of the Learned Zoologist.)

P. cordifera appears to be a synonym for J. spinosa, but I haven't yet found a reference that states that explicitly. ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 19:52, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lesson's original description is a paragraph in “Notes sur les Oiseaux nouveaux ou peu connus rapportés de la mer du Sud, par M. Adolphe Lesson.” (Notes on new or little-known birds brought back from the South Sea, by Mr. Adolphe Lesson.) https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/51063#page/145/mode/1up ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 20:12, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Finally found it listed at Avibase https://avibase.bsc-eoc.org/species.jsp?lang=EN&avibaseid=3E6F686E54DC358F&sec=synonyms. Along with Parra variabilis L. 1766; Parra jacana Shaw 1824; … ⁓ Pelagicmessages ) 20:56, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
