Very tenuous link to Sting[edit]

Didn't Sting leave Northern Counties College twenty years before Northumbria University came into being? Hardly an alumnus!

RE: Gordon Sumner (Sting), CBE Internationally renowned musician, songwriter and actor. Lead singer and bassist with rock/pop band 'The Police' who won six Grammy awards in the 1980s. Sting has also achieved great success as a solo artist. Sting qualified as a teacher in 1974 from Northern Counties College of Education, one of Northumbria University's predecessor colleges, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music in 1992 by the University. Sting was made a Commander of the British Empire in June 2003.

Northumbria Uni, existed as of 1969. Therefore, i think it's safe to claim this one despite it being a bit sketchy.

source for the figures[edit]

Can anyone provide a source for the quoted student population figures? I have a suspicion that they could be out-of-date. If so, please cite your sources and provide a date from when the census took place. Cheers! -- Jon Dowland 21:26, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Enrollment figures
You were right, wherever those figures came from they were incorrect. According to the University's own website, there are "just over 23,500 students about 16,000 of whom are full-time" . The webpage where I obtained the information was updated on 19 July 2006. Here is the link if you wish to check it out. History of Northumbria University. I have updated the page to reflect this.

University ratings[edit]

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. QS ranking for 2021 for the university should be 651-700. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:3800:877:319A:2908:4767:5E4B:5660 (talk) 19:04, 24 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Famous Alumni[edit]

So many big names have been forgotten from this section of the page, and isn't truly representative of our Universities past students. A few of the 'big names' excluded, follow: jamie noon(england and falcons), Alan Tomes (most capped Scotland rugby lock ever), Ed Thorpe (Munster rugby), Michael Stephenson(), Tom May (Falcons), Vicky Pendleton (Gold and Silver Commonwealth cycling medals), Chris Cook (Double commonwealth swimming gold medalist), Kevin Whately (Midsomer murders), Duncan Lloyd (Maximo Park)......list goes on http://northumbria.ac.uk/browse/naa/famous/?view=Standard--DrM 02:39, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Coach Lane Campus[edit]

I've just corrected the section regarding the large government offices to the rear of the Coach Lane Campus. Tyneview Park, as it is called is entirely Dept. Work & Pensions and not HMRC. HMRC is based over at Benton Park View, next to Longbenton Metro station BNC85 (talk) 12:03, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

City University of Newcastle upon Tyne[edit]

I see someone's added a section about the naming of the institution after it ceased being a Polytechnic. Having grown up in Newcastle myself, I and many others had heard about the possible name for the new university and the problems the acronym posed, however I was of the impression that this was an urban myth and that the name, City University of Newcastle upon Tyne was never a serious suggested name for Northumbria University. However, I could be wrong on this, do we have any citations or sources to back this up? BNC85 (talk) 17:20, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was reported by Tyne Tees news back in 1992 when converting from a Polytechnic. I remember the news report as I was a student over at the University of Newcastle at the time (later going to Northumbria as a postgrad), however, can't find a reliable web reference. I didn't realise it had gone as far as them ordering headed stationary and signs with the name on!!!Beefy_SAFC 11:08, 25 January 2011 (UTC).[reply]

A link to, roughly, the story about the naming as City University of Newcastle upon Tyne is as follows and there's what the logo "might" have looked like.

I'll add the initials weren't picked up on until UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, contacted Newcastle Polytechnic / soon-to-be Northumbria University to say how the initials looked on the UCAS computer systems. The above link correctly records that bit.

Inclusion on the main page can't really be justified (I see reference has been removed from the main page at some point) unless someone finds definitive proof such a clear web story about the incident, or a logo or letter head. There I'll leave it though.Beefy_SAFC 10.05, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

History of Northumbria Uni[edit]

I added a brief sentence setting out that N'castle poly obtained university status as part of a wave of conversions in 1992 affecting the UK polytechnic sector. This adds a little broader context to the history of the university.

As a general remark, it appears that the main editors of this page (as for most new university pages) have done their utmost to avoid the association of N.U. with the word polytechnic. This is (a) a pity since polys enjoyed an excellent reputation in their specialist areas and (b) a little misleading to the casual reader. For most people in the Newcastle area, N.U. was known for most of their lives as simply "the poly" or "Newcastle Poly". I realise that it somehow sounds a little better from a PR-perspective to stress the association of college -> university and play down the polytechnic-history. However, we're not writing a PR page here, I hope. Phys123 (talk) 15:00, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rankings[edit]

There seems to be something a little strange going on with the rankings table. For example, the Guardian 2011 ranked Northumbria at 67, down from 53 in 2010 (as shown in the reference in the article) and not 47 down from 33 as given in the article. I wonder if somebody might have accidentally inflated the Guardian's rankings by 20?

Similarly in the "Complete University" guide, Northumbria was actually 64th in 2011, not 34th as shown in the article, etc.

I'll try to get round to correcting this if nobody else does. This section needs tagging with something but I'm not sure what (or even deleting) in the meantime. Reg porter (talk) 11:40, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

edit: Mystery solved. The table was vandalized as follows: 08:08, 13 December 2010 117.199.183.52 (talk) (15,387 bytes) (→Rankings and reputation). I've undone it. Reg porter (talk) 11:45, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Correct logo discussion[edit]

Two users posted on the Teahouse over the past year that the logo for this article is incorrect. However, it matches the one showing on the school web site. There are two logos on Wikipedia - the current one [[1]], with the university name misspelled, and a different one here [[2]] with the correct university name spelling, and a lower case l. Logo Position[edit]

I think someone should swap the location of the logo, and the coat of arms, so that any confusion is negated. Habat1165 (talk) 16:24, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
