old comments[edit]

What is the reasoning behind adding an 'e' to the name of this article? Every reference I've seen to the cemetery in travel and historical literature has transliterated it without that final 'e'. UNESCO has it that way, too. Gorilla Jones 15:44, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's been moved again without expanation to 'i' instead of 'e', which according to Google is an even less frequently used transliteration. Halibutt, please explain or this should be considered vandalism. Gorilla Jones 11:11, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reburials[edit]

"As the Bolsheviks desecrated other monasteries in Moscow, the notables interred there (i.e., Nikolai Gogol) were being reburied at the Novodevichy."
Was this reburial on a regular basis so that worth mentioning here or it was only Gogol? Also, in case of Gogol, his first burial place was simply demolished, rather than "desecrated". I'd say "Novodevichi" was desecrated for good as well. So I am deleting this sentence until clarification of the correctness and notability of the item. mikka (t) 17:01, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Celebrities buried there"[edit]

I don't think "celebrities" is the right word for the list of people buried at Novodevichy. It carries too much of a connotation (in English, at least) of modern socialites and entertainers, and generally shallow ones, at that. "Famous persons" or "Notable persons" might be a better fit. I agree. When I remade this section I kept "Famous". Someone edited my usage and I am somewhat reluctant to change it back. I think "Notable" is better. Perhaps checking other famous cemetried (in the US, France, Italy, etc.) could give us a good example on how to do this. Mhym 03:15, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From a quick look at this list, there seems to be an even mix between "Famous persons" and "Notable burials". I'd prefer the latter - some of the burials at Novodevichy are hardly "famous", even to Russians, but are still notable nonetheless. Gorilla Jones 16:20, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeltsin's temporary grave[edit]

Grave of Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin, first President of the Russian Federation.

Gallery[edit]

The gallery of monuments was taken out some time ago with only the comment "We have commons for galleries"

Actually, I don't think this statement fully reflected policy at the time, and certainly does not now. See WP:Galleries. The ensemble of important and sculptural or otherwise impressive monuments is what make Novodevichy special, and to me, that takes a gallery to show. Of course the gallery should be limited to important and otherwise impressive monuments. I'd think 15-20 would be the top number.

Minor - alphabetically the image of "Nadezhda Alliluyeva-Stalin" was put under "S". I am absolutely sure that she NEVER used the last name "Stalin," - if she had used his name, in the Russian language it would be "Stalina" like her daughter once used. More than that though "Alliluyeva" seems to be the name she used, much like Krupskaya used her maidan name rather than Lenina. Smallbones (talk) 16:51, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery redux[edit]

Somebody cleaned up the gallery, which was overdo, but I think removed too many images. I've rechecked Wikipedia:Image use policy and it's subsection WP:Galleries and see nothing that prevents us from having a well-thought out and well-maintained gallery in this article. Smallbones, don't be angry just because "somebody" got rid of the images you like so much. If you wanna re-add them, please, do it right, not spreading 'em 'round like paper on your desk. Instead, I'll delete Novodevichy Cemetery off my watchlist once I see too many big-outta-place pictures as compared to a very short text.
