Renaming

[edit]

Should be renamed to Novopolotsk. Altaveron (talk) 18:43, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Altaveron: You are right indeed. Composed of 'Novo' and 'Polotsk' ('New Polotsk'), why should the name be 'Nava-Polatsk'? --Les Yeux Noirs (talk) 16:00, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

NovopolatskNovopolotsk – The name Navapolatsk is an incorrect name, encountering the fact that it is composed of 'novo-' and 'Polotsk' (literally New Polotsk) in Belarusian. Compare with any city such as New York, which would not be written in an other way. Please cancel my mistake in the move I made (from Navapolatsk to Novopolatsk). Les Yeux Noirs (talk) 15:45, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support a move from the current title which the nominator acknowledges is a typo. I have no problem with the Russian name, Novopolotsk, as a title, but the stable title for years was the Belarusian name, Navapolatsk. Now might be as good a time as any to discuss which language should be used for Belarusian cities and towns in cases where there is limited coverage in English sources. Currently, most places have titles at their Belarusian names (e.g. Babruysk, Barysaw, Mazyr) but a number of the more populated cities have Russian names (e.g. Gomel, Polotsk, Vitebsk). Peruse the List of cities and towns in Belarus or categories such as Category:Cities in Belarus or Category:Towns in Belarus for more examples. WP:NCPLACE § Belarus states, "major cities (voblast capitals) are named according to the most common English usage. All other settlements are named according to national rules (exceptions may be discussed case by case)." WP:BELARUSIANNAMES implies use of Belarusian but I can't find much other discussion of the issue at WT:WikiProject Belarus. The status quo seems to work fine but what thinken ye? —  AjaxSmack  15:00, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Since this city is in Belarus, not Russia, it should certainly have a Belarusian name, rather than a Russian one. As far as comparison to Polotsk is concerned, this city, which was founded in 1958, has a population (according to its infobox) of 108 thousand, while Polotsk, which was founded over a thousand yours earlier, in 862, has a population of 83 thousand. Thus Polotsk, which is currently listed as Polatsk in Novopolatsk's history, may also be in line to have its name changed to Polatsk. Additionally, there would be the question as to whether Novopolotsk (bandy club) should remain under that name or be moved to Navapolatsk (bandy club). —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 18:14, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
