His 1980s edition in the Oxford History of England is credited to "J. N. L. Myres" - is he ever called "Nowell Myres" in writings? If not, then should this article be moved? (Compare A. J. P. Taylor not "Alan Taylor" in the same series.) Timrollpickering 21:07, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
His entry in the Dictionary of National Biography says that he was known as Nowell. There are also a number of archaeological websites that refer to him as "Nowell Myres". It was always common in the past to credit writings to authors using only their initials not their names - A J P Taylor is, of course, best known by his initials, but their use does not mean that that was the common form. If we took that line then almost every figure of the 19th and early 20th centuries would have their article title featuring just their initials, since that was usually the form used to refer to them in the newspapers and in published works at the time. -- Necrothesp 23:37, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I entered J.N.L.Myres in the Wikipedia search box and hit a blank wall. Wikipedia does not usually present a blank wall but tries to give some help in finding an entry, but not this time. The name, of the author of a standard volume of the Oxford History of England, has been known to me since I was at school and I have never heard of "Nowell Myres". I think Wikipedia should at least put a "redirects to.." link to connect J.N.L.Myres to Nowell MyresProspuct (talk) 22:12, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
