No consensus to merge or for any action other than, perhaps, to improve; discussion stale. Klbrain (talk) 22:47, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

These are both O-ring chains, just with an improved profile for better sealing and less friction. We give a clearer article from them merged. Andy Dingley (talk) 13:09, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Andy Dingley, given the fact that I created the article few hours ago and I am still modifying it, I disagree with you. I have enough data on both of them to create more than two full size articles and I just need a little time to standardize it. So, please wait a little more and trust me. Navinsingh133 (talk) 14:03, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Both of these articles are extremely thin on material, dribbling out facts and padding them with a lot of extra words. I'm not even sure O-ring chain shouldn't be up-merged too, but at least these two should be combined. A good strategy is to expand an existing article until it becomes so big that splitting off a new article is obviously necessary. WP:Summary style describes this in depth. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 15:20, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support merging them to motorbike chain, but roller chain would be too far. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:25, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I like the Idea of Andy ! In fact I am also considering something like that, but thinking about motorcycle transmission or roller chain, so I will get on with it. Dennis, if you guys disagree with the importance of the articles and think of them(BOTH) as "dribbling out facts and padding them with a lot of extra words"(Useless) then feel free to scrape my article before completion. After all, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a personal notebook. Just notify me before scrapping them so I won't try to it better(and waste my efforts).Thank you Navinsingh133 (talk) 16:44, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Meanwhile I am finding the right article to merge them into. Navinsingh133 (talk) 17:36, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not so sure I think it's a good idea to treat motorcycle chains separately from bicycle chains. Their origins in early motorized bicycles were essentially the same. Much of the technology improvement went back and forth from one industry to the other. The design challenges were much the same, differing by the degree of power involved. If we were writing a repair manual, then teaching a bicycle mechanic about motorcycle chains would be a waste of time. But this is not a repair manual. Contrasting the issues of a 100 hp chain drive vs a 3 hp chain drive is a good way to get insight into the entire subject, which is the point of an encyclopedia.
I think creating the content, making it read in a way that flows and is complete, should be done first. Once we have something coherent to look at, then it is easier to talk about which article to move it or merge it to, or which articles to rename, or whatever. So maybe look at bicycle chain and imagine rewriting it as bicycle/motorcycle chain, and see where that leaves us. If all that seems like too much work, then Andy's probably right: just make the motorbike chain article out of what we have now. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 17:29, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Have you ever worked with both motorbike chain and bike chain? Particularly since the development of the bushingless chain for bikes, they're significantly different. Motorbike chains are about lubrication and power transmission, bike chains are about sideways flexibility without tension slop, and shedding dirt faster than they retain grease. Bike chains also manage with very lightly fitted pins, or spring clips, motorbikes need some real sort of fitting to retain them.
There's no more in common between bikes and motorbikes than any other sort of roller chain. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:42, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If we merged both articles into a new article called motorcycle chain(or motorbike chain), then we will have to add data about non-O-ring(standard) chains also. Given the scenario, I will say Dennis is right about at least one thing- we should complete these little sisters(X-ring and O-ring) first so that new article(if created) is more coherent.
Since Andy just told us the difference between bicycle and motorcycle chain, looks like bike chain is not an option.Navinsingh133 (talk) 18:24, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Um Why this article(O-ring) doesn't cite any references?? If we merge it with any other article, it will spoil that too.
Looks like we will have to recreate the whole article if we plan on merging it to any other articles.Navinsingh133 (talk) 18:50, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
