I'm removing this. It doesn't clearly relate to enology, and terroir is covered much better and vine covered coherently in their respective articles.

Oenology v Enology[edit]

The 'oe' looks fancy, but 'enology' seems to be the most common spelling, and the one favored in dictionaries. Grant, 6 March 2018

It seems to be a British English vs American English issue. Sometimes the correct one to use is self-evident (e.g. an American company or a British actor) but for global topics, it becomes harder to find the balanced option to use. However I did look both up and oenology does appear to be more prevalent. Rayman60 (talk) 18:47, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Natural aspects[edit]

From a natural point of view, the characteristics of a wine are determined by two factors : vine and terroir. A vine is a type of grape fruit, each type has different characteristics and grows best in a particular climate.

The terroir (terre = "earth" in French) is the name used to describe aspects of wine linked with geological or climatological factors. The type of grape is not the only factor affecting the final taste. The nature of soil (chalk, silica,...), number of days of sunshine, and humidity play a big part as well. Unlike other plants, a grapevine need not be "satisfied" to obtain good results. One says that the vine has to suffer, such as from lack of water or from cold, in order to produce the best grape.

"..from grape harvest to.."[edit]

..should be modified to "..from grape growing to..". Oenolgy does not start with the harvest. It includes the growing of grapes also, all aspects to produce wine. (for example also to buy the right area for winegrowing, to dig for and to analyze the soil data of a potential winegrowing soil etc.). BerndB 17:02, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
