English translation of USKOK

[edit]

Namely, USKOK (Ured za suzbijanje korupcije i organiziranog kriminaliteta), is an office subordinated to the central State Attorney's Office (Državno odvjetništvo) in Zagreb and its task is to investigate and aggressively prosecute public officials, public bodies, county, municipal and state authorities, individuals, legal persons and other offenders in the field of corruption and organised criminality across the entirety of Croatia. In spite of this, the translation of USKOK goes as follows: Croatian State Prosecutor's Office for the Suppression of Organized Crime and Corruption.

The problem is, Croatia does not sanction a post of State Prosecutor (Državni tužitelj). Croatia does, in other words, not have or withhold a position of the State Prosecutor, meaning that it would be impossible for the said Office to be subordinated to a position which does not exist. What could be used is: Croatian State Attorney's Office for the Suppression of Organised Crime and Corruption. State Prosecutor and State Attorney are not the same, Croatia only has the latter.
