Most Recent Realignment to State Highway 152 February 2, 2004!?[edit]

My 2006 Mosher-Adams Oklahoma City atlas shows SH 152 on its original alignment for its easternmost few miles: fron I-44, west on 29th Street to Newcastle Blvd., and then southwest on Newcastle to at least the bridge under Airport Rd. From there to Council Rd. the alignment is not clear. It says it utilized 44th to Council and then followed Council south to the February 2, 2004 opening of the new alignment, which ended at Council at that time. However, the alignment is simply impossible to determine between Council and the bridge where Newcastle goes under Airport Rd., as that alignment has not yet been verified. There is no interchange between Airport Rd. and Newcastle Blvd. Could it be that 152 followed Newcastle to 44th to Council?? Or could it be that it was split into two disconnected segments, where the eastern terminus of the western segment was at Council and the western terminus of the eastern segment was on Newcastle where it went under Airport Road? I strongly doubt that 152 was rerouted onto Airport Road until the connector freeway between Council and the western terminus of Airport Rd. opened in 2007. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.157.172.101 (talk) 19:24, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest in our SH-152 article! The alignment onto the Airport Road freeway taking place in 2004 is according to the SH-152 revision history provided by ODOT. This lists the dates that changes to SH-152 were approved by the state highway commission. You are correct that before the connector freeway was built, but after Airport Road became SH-152, there was a temporary realignment. Eric Stuve's OKHighways site has a dedicated page about the SH-152 realignment. To paraphrase what it says, prior to the realignment, SH-152 followed (from the west) S.W. 74th St. → Council Road → Newcastle Road → S.W. 29th St. The section of freeway between S.W. 74th Street and the Council Road interchange was built first; SH-152 followed this, then turned north onto Council, then turned east on S.W. 44th Street and followed that until S.W. 44th transitioned into Airport Road. The connector between the new freeway segment and Airport Road was then built and SH-152 was moved to the all-freeway route.

As to why this isn't covered in the article: 1) OKHighways is a self-published source so it's considered bad form to use it to back up statements in articles, 2) it was a temporary condition that was in place simply because of the missing link between Council and Airport Road, only lasting a couple of years (OKHighways's information is current as of April 2004) so it wasn't really terribly significant to the history of the route, 3) again, because it was a temporary condition, lasting only three years, it would probably be pretty difficult to find a reliable map that showed it. Perhaps we could explain this if we found a good map showing the temporary alignment, but again, since it only lasted three years and was always meant to be temporary, it's not that important to someone wanting the general history of SH-152 as I see it.
