Old railway lines in Wigan ?[edit]

Out of 15 old stations listed in this article, only two of them were 'in Wigan'. The stations were built, operational and demolished long before the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan came to be. Therefore, the title of this article should be changed to 'Old railway lines that once were in the area now known as the modern day Metropolitan Borough of Wigan'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.24.172.12 (talk) 23:34, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

All of them were in either the Wigan Rural District or the Municipal Borough of Wigan/County Borough of Wigan when constructed, even West Leigh and Bedford Station which was 500m from the edge of the Municipal Borough of Leigh, in the hamlet of Crankwood (Plank Lane formed the municipal border with all the buildings on the North and East sides of the road in Wigan and all those on the south side of the road as far as its junction with Crankwood Road were in Leigh). Plank Lane station itself was about 200m inside Wigan, it was also built on Crankwood Road just to the east of the other station but on a different rail line. Wigan Rural District was created by the Local Government Act 1894 and contained the town of Wigan plus the six civil parishes of Dalton, Haigh, Parbold, Shevington, Worthington and Wrightington. It follows, does it not, that the rest of the stations mentioned in this article, other than Wallgate, Wigan Central and Wigan North Western and Whelley, were not in "the once proud town of Wigan" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.25.249.162 (talk) 09:11, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
