NPOV

[edit]

This article omits the reasons why the subject was detained. It relies extensively on the defense version of events. It quotes the defense attorney. It does not present the U.S. military's side of things Joaquin Murietta 04:29, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

      • What is the U.S. military's side of things? No-one knows. NPOV does not mean giving both sides if they are both available and no sides if they arn't. Jooler 13:10, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • NPOV means making sure there is a balanced presentation of the events. Deghayes case is certainly full of controversey, however, the torture claims are unverified and even his own attorney makes several statements counter to Deghayes. Recognize that some information may be unavailable - missing gaps should be noted in the event of FOIA filings or other release.Jettparmer (talk) 16:11, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
          • NPOV cannot be used to justify adding details that accuse a living person of a criminal offence, in particular if that person was neither charged nor brought to trial for any offence. Beyond stating brief facts about the date and location of Mr Deghayes arrest, and the initial claims of US authorities as to alleged charges, all of which are currently represented in this article as stands, no undue weight may be given to these claims under a NPOV defence. Allegations made by Mr Deghayes subsequent to his release may be included in this article as relevant statements by a direct party. It is up to US authorities to present any counter arguments to these allegations, which they have refused to do at the present time. Until, and unless, a competent US authority releases further details in an authorised disclosure, no additional details pertaining to allegations against Mr Deghayes should be added to this article under the NPOV clause, and then preferably only when entered as admissable evidence in a competent court of law with legal jurisdiction. Any attempts to introduce claims of criminal activity on the part of Mr Deghayes unsupported by explicit quotation from official statements from a US authority will lead to a request by me to lock this article.Ethdhelwen (talk) 17:23, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

revert

[edit]

I reverted a small change. Arabic names are drawn from a much smaller namespace than English names. This means that name collision -- encountering multiple individuals whose names are homonymous -- are quite common. I don't think Clive Stafford Smith said Abu Wahid was a Saudi. That would make this conclusion a no-doubt innocent instance of original research.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 13:44, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted Geo's removal of the default sorting parameters on the categories. Although I understand that Arabic speakers do not have surnames in exactly the same way as English speakers, in a way they do when they are listed in the encyclopedia. Or in the media coverage that we derive an article like this from. Itsmejudith (talk) 10:04, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reorg

[edit]

The article needs substantial reordering in order to provide a better biographical view. Ther is a lot of missing and unverified time and events prior to Deghayes capture in Pakistan. A suggested format would be as follows;

1) Early Life and Family 2) Education (HS through College) 3) Life in Pakistan 4) Arrest and Incarceration (2002-2007) (include claims and legal proceedings) 5) Return to the UK 6) Extradition to Spain 7) Current Status

Non-functioning defaultsort?

[edit]

His name does not appear under "D", when sorted on the list, Category:Bagram Theater Internment Facility detainees.

(The defaultsort-setting, seems to be correct.)

--Corner benchmark (talk) 15:40, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the sortkey which was applied to this category. I'm guessing that individual sortkeys might be necessary on some of these foreign names within that cat (?) but certainly isn't needed in this case. --NSH001 (talk) 23:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes are too lengthy

[edit]

The CSRTs and ARB process have been strongly criticized, and parts of the Detainee Treatment Act (2005) and Military Commissions Act of 2006 overturned as unconstitutional. I think there should not be such extensive quoting from DOD primary sources, which have been criticized as relying on unvalidated hearsay and over-reliant on "associations" rather than facts of actions. These can be summarized with links to the documents. In several years, the government never charged him with war crimes.Parkwells (talk) 19:23, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
