Years Active
It now says 2010-16, is it really true the One Direction is no more? It did scared me when we though 1D broke up thanks to US Weekly's article, it was later turned into false!
Spencer H. Karter (talk) 05:52, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
- Yes as of January 2016 the group is no longer active.--Krystaleen 02:14, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Capping off the years as "2010–16" is misleading; they are on a hiatus, which means they are still active as a group. To cap-off the years implies that they have permanently split. Also, listing as "2010–2016" is wrong per Wikipedia's policies on years, not to mention {{Small}} should be used if insisting on using small text, though, it is suggested against using small text for visual purposes in the MOS. livelikemusic talk! 02:35, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- Being on hiatus means they are NOT active. I don't get how you can say they're active at all. It should be listed as 2010–16.--Krystaleen 08:30, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- "2010–16" implies that they are no longer together as a group. They have not split. A hiatus does not equate to a split. If they split, and it were listed as "2010–16", then all of them would be categorized as "Past members", and that would be false information. livelikemusic talk! 23:51, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
- Well they are no longer together indeed. They're on perpetual "hiatus", which is for all intents and purposes, a split. See NSYNC.--Krystaleen 06:59, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- To try and compare this situation to NSYNC is kind of double-sided; yes, NSYNC went on a hiatus, but they later announced their split once solo projects were pursued. 1D have yet to do that, and until they do, they're still considered a collective group. They're on a break, not a permanent split, and until it is announced as permanent, we cannot assume it to be as such. livelikemusic talk! 02:56, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
- NSYNC never announced a split though. Lance Bass said he considered them split up a few years later but there was never an official announcement from the group that they've split. It's a very similar situation with 1D now, what with all the members going solo and whispers that it's a permanent split. I do agree nothing is official, but idk listing them as presently active seems very misleading.--Krystaleen 09:55, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
- But they have gone on statement to say they are not splitting and have persistently gone on statement to say they are not splitting, and are taking one-year off to pursue solo projects (whether within music or otherwise). And there is nothing noting otherwise. livelikemusic talk! 01:46, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Official members and backing band
I have seen that someone has completely removed both the members of the band AND the backing band, which is in my opinion a very useful piece of information. Every boy band has a backing band, and One Direction has always been touring with the same four musicians:
Josh Devine – drums (2010–) Dan Richards – guitar (2010–) Jon Shone – keyboard, percussion (2010–) Sandy Beales – bass (2010–)
They should be absolutely mentioned in the article, since in every 1D video/concert they play and appear. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Helevorn (talk • contribs) 21:37, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Put Harry Styles back into the members list, it has not been confirmed and therefore shouldn't be falsely accused.

One Direction has announce on a show that they have recently been on. They had stated that their hiatus is just a temporary thing and that they will come back with new songs with in a year. Louis Tomlinson has recently had a baby boy named Freddy. Recourses do not know if Louis will stay and care for the baby or continue with his career. Harry Styles did not leave the management of the recording company. Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne all stated that 'We just need a year to do our own thing and we are definitely coming back with new songs for the fans' With that proof, One Direction is not splitting and they will continue their tour later on next year in 2017. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.220.204.88 (talk) 22:31, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

remove Ryan Ross from members list
One Direction and power pop genre
One Direction does not fall under the power pop genre, this is why I removed those references because if any music writer, such as the ones you referenced, has labeled them as power pop then they are confused about what the power pop genre entails. Just becuase they may be a reputable source by the wikipedia defintion doesn't mean they are correct in their categorizations, as it is very common for music writers to apply the power pop label to a wide range of bands where it isn't appropriate - as has been stated on the wikipedia page for power pop. By describing the One Direction album as power pop you are spreading incorrect information, and this article is significantly worse for it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Buffalo mozzarella (talk • contribs) 01:21, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Critique an Article Questions
Analyzing this article and answering questions for a specific course
Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
The information on the article comes from more than 180 online sources and a handful of publications. Most of the sources are neutral as they come from official music chart records and/or newspapers. Yet, some of them come from social media sources and blogs such as "The Hollywood Reporter"[1] , "Daily Mail"[2] and "Telegraph"[3] which are known for their biases on celebrity lifestyles. Yet, in this specific case, these sites are used to support the earlier history of the band when they were on X-Factor and retell the events that occurred. Some bias was noted, not by the writer, but in referencing the style of the band and citing sources which critique the band in relation to Justin Bieber. This was found under the tab "Image" of the article.
Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
I checked a few of the citations and all of the links did work. The majority of them were for online newspapers and music outlets such as "Billboard." From what I noted, there is slight similarities in the wording but nothing I can consider to be as plagiarism. The writer did a good job at making the words their own while at the same time referencing to the sources they used. They also did a good job at citing their sources correctly.

Harry needs to be put back into the current members category because he isn't the only one that signed with another record label. They are on hiatus, so it makes no sense that you do that. I suggest putting this article in Category:Family musical groups because Louis Tomlinson is producing a girl group for his sisters, Zayn is looking for his long-lost twin sister, Liam & Harry are big brother and little sister, and Niall is two older same-sex siblings before her! I thought I already told you that they are all second cousins like Erin and Leeann were with us. Second cousins means that One Direction, stemmed from either the words "overdose" and "identity" when using the number 1 instead of the letter o, that he is not one in a million nor one of a kind, but a twin, all share the same grandparents, great-uncles, and great-aunts. Fraternal quintuplets. Zayn Malik is in Category:Twin musicians, Category:Fraternal twin male actors, and Category:Twin people from England. The only one he is related to is Megan and Liz, not identical twins. The only one he is related to is Spencer List. Zayn is the only fraternal twin in England. --174.109.222.213 (talk) 20:27, 17 July 2017 (UTC) One Direction has their own articles because Zayn is a twin. --174.109.222.213 (talk) 20:42, 18 July 2017 (UTC) |

The thing is One Direction are still a boyband, but the wiki page shows 'were' . They are on a hiatus. They haven't disbanded. So I request you to change the text from 'were' to 'are'. DirectionerEditing (talk) 05:07, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
- Not done: The infobox and text of the article clearly indicate the status of "on hiatus". The use of "were" versus "are" does not define their status. Historically, pop groups "on hiatus" for over two years are not actively producing music as a group so the use of "were" in the lede sentence is accurate. Records sold
I added it to the lead. According to Agence France-Presse, 50 million (2017).
Previously, Evening Standard had it at 45 million (2015) CC. @EleniSpelmen:. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 05:08, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Cornerstonepicker: Evening Standard article at least was really about sales. This new one is just not about that at all. It is so random. Ok, I get it now. You can add it again. I will not change it. But Evening Standart article was way better. I would stay with it before someone will release something like that again. + article from 2015 reported sales only to the end of 2014. Without a lot sales from Four, without huge Drag me Down, Perfect and Made in the A.M. And it is too low for 2017 having only +5 million. I hope you understand why I was not agree with this information.

"One Direction (commonly abbreviated as 1D) is an". Please change is to was, as the band is no more and all of its former members are now solo artists. https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2016/10/26/4-of-the-5-one-direction-members-now-officially-have-solo-deals/#5afcd08f4b8d Jeremiahjthomson03 (talk) 13:12, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- Not done: The group has not broken up but is rather on hiatus. While the two often effectively mean the same in terms of outcome, "break-up" typically indicates a sense of permanence while "hiatus" indicates that the members are taking an extended break but may re-form at any time. Articles for other groups that are also officially on hiatus (such as LMFAO, fun., and the Black Eyed Peas) also use the present tense in the first sentence, and we will continue to do the same here. One Direction (commonly abbreviated as 1D) is an English-Irish pop boy band composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and previously, Zayn Malik until his departure from the band on 25 March 2015. They became a band on July, 23, 2010 at 8:44pm Propelled to international success by social media, One Direction's five albums, Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015), topped charts in most major markets, and generated hit singles including "What Makes You Beautiful", "Live While We're Young", "Little Things", "Best Song Ever", "Story of My Life", "Drag Me Down" and "Perfect". Their awards include six Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, eleven MTV Europe Music Awards, seven American Music Awards (including Artist of the Year in 2014 and 2015), and 28 Teen Choice Awards, among many others. According to Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, One Direction represented a $50 million business empire by June 2012. They were proclaimed 2012's "Top New Artist" by Billboard.[1] According to the Sunday Times Rich List, by April 2013, they had an estimated personal combined wealth of £25 million ($41.2m) making them the second-wealthiest musicians in the UK under 30 years of age.[2] In 2014, Forbes listed them the second-highest earning celebrities under 30, with the group earning an estimated $75 million from June 2013 to June 2014.[3] In June 2015, Forbes listed their earnings at $130 million for the previous twelve months,[4] and ranked them the fourth highest earning celebrities in the world.[5] In 2016 Forbes ranked them the world's second highest earning celebrities.[6] After the release of Four, One Direction became the first band in the US Billboard 200 history to have their first four albums debut at number one.[7] Their third album, Midnight Memories, was the best-selling album worldwide of 2013.[8] The band's Where We Are Tour in support of Midnight Memories and Four, was the highest-grossing concert tour in 2014, and the highest-grossing tour ever by a vocal group, generating $282 million.[9] In 2014, Billboard named One Direction Artist of the Year.[10][11] The band went on hiatus in January 2016, allowing all members to pursue other projects.[12][13][14] In just over five years together they have sold more than 70 million records, have achieved over 100 number ones and performed to over 10 million fans worldwide.[15] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:1900:7730:C5A7:8634:4BEC:7ABE (talk) 00:17, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
The first sentence has been changed to past-tense again, which (as has been stated here) isn't appropriate for a band on hiatus (regardless of the length of that hiatus and regardless of solo careers). If the article uses British English, the sentence should read "One Direction are..." (I'm new here, apologies if I'm not making this request properly!)Muldermouse (talk) 17:51, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Second sentence: it should be "The group is" NOT "The group are". Group must be SINGULAR in this specific case. "The group" cannot be referring to "the members of the group" because, the members of the group cannot be "composed of" themselves. 4.30.96.170 (talk) 23:08, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Directioners
The fan base of One Direction call themselves 'Directioners'. Directioners are extremely dedicated fans whose main priority is to make sure the four/five boys are happy. But they are what we call clowns, they are mainly teenagers who obsess of 5 grown men and refer to them as cute and babies even though they are like twice their age. They show their love for these men on all social platforms, ever creating a "one direction side of "tik tok" which showcase things like one direction concerts, video diaries, edits and inside jokes that only the fandom would get. They have a strong hatred towards Simon Cowell and modest for all that they supposedly put them through. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jazlynfulton (talk • contribs) 04:33, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

There seem to be little to no details regarding Zayn Malik's departure.
So I was reading through the band's history and when I got to the 2015-2019 section the entirety of the discussion covering the departure of Zayn Malik was "On 25 March 2015, the band released a statement announcing Malik's departure." and that's it. There seems to be no prelude, no examination of why he left and no details regarding the feelings of everyone involved.
Literally the titles in the references section shed more light on the situation than the wikipedia article itself:
141 "One Direction: Zayn Malik Confirms Departure From Band"
143 "Zayn Malik Explains One Direction Exit: 'I Have To Do What Feels Right in My Heart'"
144 "One Direction Discusses Zayn Malik's Departure with James Corden: We Were a Little Bit Angry"
Considering how big Zayn's departure was for the band I feel like it could use some expanding and examination.
Krysox (talk) 09:43, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- I feel that this is a very significant aspect to the article that is currently missing greatly. It might even be worth a separate page, although it's probably too late to compile all the departure information, unless? Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 09:29, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
- I mean even a brief cursory look at what happened would be better than the nothing that exists right now right? As it stands I think the article doesn't even mention one of the biggest reasons the band eventually split up. Setting that as the goal there is more than enough information to do at least a superficial examination of why he left. --Krysox (talk) 01:16, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
Typo
In the section titled 2020: 10 Years of One Direction in the second paragraph, the word relieve is used while relive would be the appropriate word given the context of the sentence.
Additionally, in the same sentence in the segment "but it soon crashed shortly after its announcement", the word 'soon' is redundant and should be omitted from the sentence, like so: "but it crashed shortly after its announcement..." Allwordnoplay (talk) 19:34, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

"Whiter-than-white"?
Under the 'image' section, there is a quote from The Daily Telegraph that lists the "five boys" as "whiter-than-white." While the "whiter-than-white" descriptor would be okay if it had only listed four boys, or Niall, Louis, Liam, and Harry, it includes all five. Zayn Malik is Pakistani, and I feel as though this quote should be changed to a different one, or at least have the "whiter-than-white" descriptor cut out to avoid white-washing Zayn. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:248:5001:4850:1598:5D26:24C:AC54 (talk) 03:30, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

They sold over 200 million records confirmed by reliable sources
I edited the page cause 3 major reliable sources already confirmed that they have sold over 200 million records worldwide which would make them one of the best selling artists in general of all time Moonlight Entm (talk) 23:23, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- How do you explain this BBC source saying 50 million, and this other BBC source saying 70 million, both published in 2020 when the band wasn't selling any new material? From these examples you can see that "reliable sources" aren't really reliable for every single fact. Each fact must be assessed for its reliability in context, per WP:CONTEXTMATTERS.
- Back in 2016 when the band was done with its string of hits, Billboard said that they had sold 7.6 million total albums in the US, and about 17 million total singles.[1] That would be about 25 million "records" sold in the US, which is a major chunk of the band's total sales. Billboard is a very, very reliable source for US sales, and the context in the published piece is completely devoted to getting the number right. After 2016, the band's sales slowed drastically. Their current totals would be close to 2016 totals. So the number 200 million is a ridiculous fabrication, unreliable in every way. Binksternet (talk) 03:36, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
Their label one of the most powerful and famous labels of all time Sony Music just confirmed it and you think is a ridiculous fabrication? Other sources like independent uk and refinery 29 confirmed it too, and one direction was the biggest boyband in the world, they were not local, and they for sure sold more in the US than just 25M, one of their tours basically grossed more than 200M+, i explained that BBC doesn't what they are talking about, how do you explain that they said in one article that they sold 50M and then in other article 70M? Nonsense, it's easier to believe prestigious and reliable labels than other source Moonlight Entm (talk) 18:12, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
That billboard sales analysis was in 2016, 5 years ago, none of those sales are updated Moonlight Entm (talk) 18:14, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
- The band has been inactive for five years. Sales figures from five years ago are still relevant. Basically, there is nothing to update.
- Touring is completely different than physical sales. In this discussion, it doesn't matter how much 1D made at concerts.
- We are never taking the band's label as a reliable source for sales. They have a vested interest in making the band look good, and they are very likely to inflate the numbers. We can use the label for release dates and updates of band status.
- There have been many discussions about grossly inflated sales figures supplied in otherwise reliable sources. One of these discussions took place at Talk:Janet_Jackson#How_many_millions_sold?_Revisiting_the_math. Jackson's label was claiming 180 million (as published in otherwise reliable sources) but the math could support no more than 100 million, which is already somewhat inflated. So we stuck with the lower number, despite having the higher number appear in reliable sources.
- The dedicated Wikipedia crew working at the list article List of best-selling music artists has been keeping very close track of all the various claims for sales, and they have established that One Direction has not reached 75 million in unit sales. If you want to argue sales higher than 70 million, you should take your concerns to Talk:List of best-selling music artists. They will tell you about the methodology for listing sales figures. I have three proposed changes. The lede says:
one of the best-selling boy bands of all time
Please remove "of all time". It is sensationalist original research and violates WP:TONE. We can say that OneDir are a best-selling boy band in the last 30 years or even (thanks to population growth) a best-selling boy band in the last 200 years but has the contributor making claims about the boy bands "of all time" really performed exhaustive research of the ancient boy bands of Aristotle's era, Tutankhamen's retinue, Cro-Magnon Man's rock concerts, etc.? Wikipedia editors simply are not authorities on what applies across all time past and future; even if Stephen Hawkins edits here, WP:CRYSTALBALL forbids making broad speculations about the entirety of future time. Further to that, "one of the best" is weasel words; if there are 30 students in a class, the shortest one is still one of the 100 tallest members of that class due to set theory. To fix this, we need to say that OneDir are within the top 10 (or whatever) best-selling boy bands. Or that OneDir were listed by XYZ reference as having made in excess of 45m sales - a claim only ten boy bands can make. (See this table for where I got 10 from).
the group got together for two weeks to get to know each other and to practice.
In Standard English as spoken by the English in England, practise is a verb and practice is a noun. This is the same pattern that applies to devise being a verb and device being a noun, advise/advice, etc. etc. etc. In foreign regional dialects such as spoken in America, practice is a verb! In the excerpt I quote, "practice" (how the noun is spelt) is being used as a verb. Since we are using English English on this article, please fix this to practise (how the verb is spelt).
In 2015, One Direction appeared in an advert for the Toyota Vios. the commercial aired in Thailand.
If that full-stop is not part of the "Vios." brand, it is disrupting this group of words. We either need "In 2015, One Direction appeared in an advert for the Toyota Vios which aired in Thailand." (turn it into one sentence) or "In 2015, One Direction appeared in an advert for the Toyota Vios. The commercial aired in Thailand." (turn it into two sentences) but not "Sentence. sentence." Much appreciated. 49.179.31.218 (talk) 08:15, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- Partly done: Hi IP, welcome to Wikipedia! I have reviewed your edit request and made some edits. I'll list in order.
- I don't see "of all time" is problematic when it is a fact. One Direction is one of the best selling boy bands of all time, this is backed up in multiple citations and independent sources, so WP:NOR doesn't apply. I also don't see how it violates WP:TONE. One Direction is one of the best selling boy bands of all recorded time. Digital media didn't exist 200 years ago, so quite simply no other boy band even stood a chance of having the reach of One Direction. Re WP:CRYSTALBALL, it is expected all time as in being all time up to now, not into the future. If they ever get overtaken, this article will be updated accordingly. I am happy to update the wording but not for the reasons provided. I agree that they are weasel words, which is all that needed to be said, but I don't see it as majorly problematic, as the issues raised would still be there if I put "one of the top X selling boy bands of all time". If you can propose an exact edit you want to be made, you can submit another request.
- "practice -> practise" - Done
- vios typo Done
- In future edit requests, please try not to over-explain simple requests as we often have quite a few to go through, saying "there is a typo here, please correct it" would've sufficed - you only need to go into great detail if somebody disputes it. Thank you again for pointing out these issues, and welcome :) ✨ Ed talk! ✨ 02:32, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- Re: brevity, I usually edit the article directly. Protection blocks this. An inaccessible LastPass vault prevents me accessing my WP credentials. So now I IPA edit. I do apologise for the overhead. Often editors and watchers defend articles from change for their own personal motivations and only a thorough edit-summary or verbose justification in a Talk page will prevent them declaring a reversion war, whereupon I shrug and just read another article. Maybe it's a bad habit, but it's an artefact of the process.
- Re: time. That life on Earth is determined by amino acids is a state that apples "throughout history". That life on Earth might be encoded by digital and quantum states is a possibility that lies "in the future". That ordered energy (and thereby matter) ultimately degrade to entropic heat is a fundamental "of all time". Few would argue that all time only applies to history for the same reason few would argue that all the different points on a compass point in the same One Direction.
- Re: tone.
Encyclopedic writing has a fairly academic approach, while remaining clear and understandable. Formal tone means that the article should not be written using argot, slang, colloquialisms, doublespeak, legalese, or jargon
- It may be that such sensationalist hyperbole is popular in attention-seeking entertainment such as tabloids or the playground but within a formal academic context being honest and accurate is simply a higher priority than stretching the truth to be eye-catching.
- I've made my case. I believe you can see my perspective. If you disagree with it, that's fine. It's an informative article; it's just unprofessional in its exaggeration. With this discussion here someone's bound to read it and fix the article sooner or later to remove "of all time". 49.179.171.149 (talk) 04:09, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- If the statement "of all time" is not to be removed, it is essential that sources are cited stating it as one of the best. Instead, the article could say "one of the best-selling" or more specifically, "one of the best of their generation."Malamushu (talk) 21:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
