While I'm thrilled to notice people care about OGF enough to write about it, as it's own article it doesn't hold enough recognition or prowess to warrant a standalone article. Similarly, this is why the article was nominated for deletion over 7 years ago, and instead it has a much better home merged in with the article for OpenStreetMap, which is the founding basis of the project.
Again I appreciate the dedication you have to write an article about the project here on Wikipedia, however again there are guidelines to keep in mind. Please review the notability guidelines Wikipedia:Notability (web) before creating articles, as while OGF may be notable to you, it still is yet to achieve a level of significance that warrants a standalone article outside of the OpenStreetMap article, where it already existed as it's own section. Perhaps you could look into merging the detail of this article with that section instead as I feel your research towards the topic is valuable. AnimationSky (talk) 23:43, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- @AnimationSky: As someone who's totally unaffiliated with OGF, I have no idea what the previous article or OGF looked like back in 2017. What got me thinking OGF might be notable is that Bittner & Glasze (2018) describe OGF as "an obvious example" of applying map infrastructure to a different type of knowledge. Granted, much less has been written about OGF than about, say, OpenRailwayMap.
- I agree that, if this article gets merged, OpenStreetMap would be a likely destination. However, it would be somewhat tenuous, since the only concrete relationship between the two projects is that they run on the same software. Unfortunately, the OSM article is not in great shape right now. It was incoherent and poorly cited several weeks ago, and I've been struggling to get it into shape since then. As things stand, merging OGF into either OpenStreetMap or Fantasy cartography would result in a WP:COATRACK. I don't think there has ever been a section solely about OGF in either article. To balance the article, we'd need to write out full sections for other related projects and organizations. Certainly doable, but it'll take some time.
